I had a great opportunity today to join Hung and Van Phan, owners of Town and Country Market & Deli in Clinton to present them with the 2026 MCRC Business Operating Grant.

This grant will help fund the replacement of aging refrigerator cases, a practical investment that will help the business continue serving customers while improving day-to-day operations.

I joined Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce member and business leader Darlene Briggs for the presentation of the grant. Small businesses play such an important role in our local economy, and programs like this help ensure that business owners have the tools they need to continue growing, investing, and serving our communities.

We're celebrating America's 250th anniversary this year, and I wanted to take a moment to show off the creativity of our local elementary school students.

I recently hosted a coloring contest and we had several winners from Killingworth Elementary School, but all of the students who participated did a fantastic job.

It was great to see how much thought and effort went into the artwork. As we get ready to celebrate this important milestone in our nation's history, it's encouraging to see young people learning about our country and its founding.

Congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all of the students, parents, and teachers who helped make the contest a success. Check out the video below to see some of the entries displayed in my office!

It was a pleasure to help welcome students from Daisy Ingraham Elementary School to the State Capitol for a tour of the Capitol and the House chambers.

One of the best parts of serving as state representative is having the opportunity to introduce young people to the legislative process and show how state government works. The students asked great questions, were eager to learn, and represented their school very well.

I hope they enjoyed their visit with State Rep. Devin Carney and I. Thank you to the teachers, staff, and chaperones who made this trip possible!

Today, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time to honor those heroes and reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.

We owe a debt that can never truly be repaid to those who wore the uniform and gave everything for our nation. As we spend time with family and friends, let us also take a moment to remember the fallen and keep their loved ones in our thoughts. May we never forget their courage, service, and sacrifice.

I am here continuing to work as we head toward that deadline, and I remain focused on finishing strong on behalf of your families and our communities.

This session has had many long days and nights, but it is my honor to work for you each day at the Capitol. Reach out to me at any time, I am always available.

👏We welcomed Matthew and Tyler Medina in the House chamber earlier this afternoon to highlight the work of these these twin brothers from Killingworth. The siblings were here for their efforts to change a state law that prohibits new teen drivers from carrying passengers who are younger than 18 for the first six months of driving, even immediate family members.

This made it difficult for the siblings to practice driving, since they couldn't be in the car together.

And as so many parents know with having to get kids to games, and other events, that meant a parent had to take two separate cars whenever one twin was driving.

We were joined today by House Republican Leader Vincent Candelora who had a bill proposal on this very issue. The siblings had testified before the Transportation Committee, and while working with Senator Christine Cohen, co-chairman of the committee, were able to tweak the law through S.B. 413, which I’m glad to say passed through the Senate and advanced from the House yesterday.

As long as one sibling holds a learner's permit, this specific change allows 16- and 17-year-old learner's permit holders to drive with their sibling, as long as they are accompanied by, and under the instruction of, an adult who is at least 20 who has been licensed for at least four years.

Thank you to the Medinas for your efforts!

🐶Not every day at the Capitol includes four-legged visitors, but maybe it should!

I had the chance to meet some great puppies from the CT Humane Society during Puppy Day today. Safe to say they were the most popular group in the building.

Organizations like this play a vital role in caring for animals and helping them find permanent homes, so if you are thinking about adopting they are a great place to start. 🐾

👉This is coming up tomorrow for anyone who needs to dispose of unwanted, or unused prescription medication. The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a biannual event hosted nationwide so that residents have a free and convenient opportunity for the disposal of medicines from households.

The event is hosted by the DEA in partnership with local law enforcement agencies all across the country.

There are several locations for the event, which you can look up here:

Last night on the House floor, I shared a deeply personal story, one that I felt was important to the debate on hand.

The majority in the House passed a controversial proposal (HB 5350) eliminating potency and dosage limits on ma*****na products sold in Connecticut, and I opposed it. The reason is personal: my 26-year-old stepson died from an overdose just three years ago. His loss deeply impacted our family, and it’s a pain we feel each and every day.

During what was a lengthy debate, my colleagues and I offered several amendments, including one to keep potency limits in place. I spoke because ma*****na can be the starting point of a dangerous path, and addiction is taking lives, including someone in my own family.

At a time when families and communities are already struggling with substance abuse, raising potency levels sends the wrong message. Ma*****na is not harmless, and increasing its strength raises the risk of dependency and, in some cases, progression to more dangerous drugs. This bill was driven by concerns that Connecticut is losing business to states with higher potency levels, but we should be far more concerned about the lives at stake.

Public safety is also a serious concern. Higher potency products can further impair judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of impaired driving and putting more people in danger on our roads.

We should be working to make our communities safer, not expanding access to stronger, more dangerous substances, and I would urge my colleagues in the Senate to think about the impact this will have on so many families.
