Taking Care of Your Feet at 50+
According to the Mayo Clinic, the average American walks 3,000 to 4,000 steps daily, or roughly 1.5 to 2 miles. Multiply 2 miles a day by 365 days in a year, and that is 730 miles walked in a year. Multiply that number by 50, and you can safely say we have probably walked over 35,000 miles, not necessarily in the most supportive shoes.
Over 50 Foot Facts
* Over time, the foot and ankle range of motion declines, leading to stiffer movements.
* As you age, your foot can become longer and broader, so it may not be your imagination that your shoes are not fitting the same.

Your Back Pain May Be Coming From Your Feet
If you are experiencing back pain and don’t remember injuring it, the discomfort may come from your feet. Many people ignore foot pain. But it would be better not to dismiss long-term foot pain, as it could cause problems in your back, hips, knees, and ankles.
Biomechanical issues can cause lower back pain. Biomechanics can be described as the study of how living things move. Issues such as flat feet or one leg being slightly longer than the other can change how you walk or run and, over time, can result in back pain. In the example of flat feet, they can cause your knees and thighs to rotate inward. This can cause an exaggerated curvature of your lower back. After a while, this posture can place more pressure on your knees and hips and lead to back pain.

Five fun foot facts you probably didn’t know.
We are betting that most of you reading this article never stop to think about your feet. Unless, of course, they’re not functioning correctly.
To give you a greater appreciation, consider these podiatric marvels:
First, one-quarter of all the bones in your body are located in your feet; 26 bones in each foot equals a whopping 52 bones in a pair of feet!
Second, when you walk, your toe carries one-half of your body weight every time your heel lifts off the floor.
Third, your two feet do not share the same size! One is usually bigger than the other that’s why the ancient Romans – the first to do so – constructed distinctive right and left shoes. It’s why to this day, you’ll have a tough time switching which shoe goes on which feet.
