We all love the ArcGIS Cleveland Historic maps and were also just as dismayed to see that it's been retired.

This link still works as of right now, and while it's clunky, it does have the information.

A new Cleveland-related acquisition by the Ohio History Connection! Cleveland artist Al Margolis worked for Argus Communications, The Plain Dealer, and American Greetings.

We’re excited to share that the Ohio History Connection has recently acquired a collection of advertising and greeting card artwork by Cleveland artist Al Margolis.

Created during the 1960s and 1970s, this vibrant collection includes hand-drawn, airbrushed and early pseudo-3D pieces showcasing Margolis’s creative process before the era of computer-designed art. Margolis (born in 1939) worked for Argus Communications, The Plain Dealer and American Greetings, leaving a lasting mark on commercial art.

Montage: A Filmed History of the 60s and 70s with a Cleveland Perspective 10/28/2025

https://library.csuohio.edu/montage/
Many years ago, Cleveland State digitized and created a web site featuring 50-some episodes of Montage, a television documentary program that aired in Cleveland on WKYC-TV, NBC from 1965 to 1978. This dramatic and professional series focused on Cleveland and Cuyahoga County, emphasizing local history, personalities, and the contribution of Northeastern Ohio to the world.

Earlier this year, with the approval of donor Dennis Goulden, the physical collection - all extant 16mm film elements and Nagra reel-to-reel recordings used to compile the original 350 Montage documentaries - was transferred to Cleveland Public Library (CPL) to become a part of the CPL Center for Media's Northeast Ohio Broadcast Archives initiative (NEOBA).

It's obviously in good hands: Cleveland Public Library is one of two libraries in the United States selected by the Library of Congress to be a part of its prestigious, grant-funded LOCal digital initiative, led by Laurie Allen, Chief of Digital Innovation Division/Library of Congress Labs. The NEOBA collections will be a key component of this initiative.

Cleveland Public Library is now looking for candidates for a brand new position to manage this amazing collection:

NORTHEAST OHIO BROADCAST ARCHIVES MANAGER.
Please share job posting with those who may be interested:
https://careers.cpl.org/jobs/16927779-northeast-ohio-broadcast-archives-manager

Cleveland Public Library seeks an experienced, highly motivated individual to build and manage --from the ground up-- a dynamic moving image archive documenting Cleveland history.
The collections that form the foundation of this initiative include the Northeast Ohio Broadcast Archives (NEOBA) and the Dennis Goulden Montage Documentary Collection (Montage). These collections are comprised of more than 250,000+ original media elements produced by Cleveland television stations WKYC (NBC) and WEWS (ABC) and radio station WGAR.

The media elements date from the 1940s to about 1990. Formats include 120,000+ coreless 16mm news film clips/segments, 132,000+ videotape clips/segments (mostly U-matic & DVCPro, with some 2-inch, 1-inch, VHS, MII, MiniDV, and Beta), 5,000+ audio clips/interviews on ¼" audio reels, and a small collection of glass phonodisc radio transcriptions from the 1940s. The collection is expected to expand over time to include material from additional Cleveland television and radio stations, regional filmmakers, and home films & videos.

Montage was a television documentary program that aired in Cleveland on WKYC (NBC) from 1965 to 1978. The 350+ episodes of this Cleveland-centric series were shot exclusively on 16mm film stock. Documentarian Dennis Goulden (b. 1935) won more than 200 awards, including numerous Emmys, for his insightful productions focused on the critical issues of the day, including the Vietnam War, LGBTQ topics, education, pollution, drugs, and crime. Accompanying this collection is an extensive, invaluable, and unexplored archive of Montage outtake material (16mm and ¼" audio reels).

The candidate selected for this permanent, full-time position will guide the planning of physical space, ordering of equipment, and hiring of a team of diverse professionals to inventory, digitize, catalog, and provide access to a vast archive of local news/documentary film and video.

Compensation starting salary range is $90,000 to $105,000 and will be based on qualifications and professional background. The Library provides 22 vacation days annually, sick & personal time, generous medical & dental coverage, life insurance, OPERS retirement benefits, and participation in Ohio Deferred Compensation.

This week: Join the Celebration!
The Press Lives On: Digitizing the Cleveland Press Collection

Thursday, October 9, 2025
11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Michael Schwartz Library, 1st Floor, East

After years of anticipation, planning, and hard work, the 104-year run of the Cleveland Press has been brought back to life—digitized and now accessible online for generations to come. This is more than just a project; it’s the preservation of the voices and stories that represented a fuller picture of the city's history.

On October 9th, we invite you to celebrate this remarkable milestone with us!

What’s in store:

- A dynamic keynote presentation by CSU’s own Dr. Richard Perloff: “The Colorful, Controversial, Captivating History of The Cleveland Press: From Seltzer to Sheppard to Sentimentalizing A Reporter’s Paper In Days Gone By.”

- A spirited roundtable with former Cleveland Press journalists Brent Larkin, Bob Roberts, Tim Rogers, and John Sabol, who will share first-hand memories from the paper's vibrant newsroom.

- Special exhibits of historical photos, artifacts, and treasures from the Cleveland Press archives—on display right on the Library’s first and third floors.

- A chance to win big! Enter a free drawing for a one-year subscription to Newspapers.com.

- Light refreshments and plenty of opportunity to mingle and reminisce.

This event is free and open to the public—a celebration for anyone who loves Cleveland’s history, journalism, and community spirit. Don’t miss it!

We're happy to say that the 100th anniversary of the Steamship William G. Mather inspired us to create a long overdue pathfinder as part of Cleveland Memory's Great Lakes Industrial History Center. https://www.clevelandmemory.org/glihc/mather/ Congratulations to the Great Lakes Science Center.

We know there will be many questions about access, so here's a quick overview:

*For now*, free digital access is limited to on-campus use by Cleveland State University students, faculty, staff and patrons for academic or research purposes. We will be providing a dedicated workstation in the library, allowing our independent researchers (that's all of you!) to use the Newspapers.com interface.

If you already have a paid subscription to Newspapers.com, or an all-access membership to Ancestry.com, you have access now! Newspapers.com subscription plans start at $7.95/month.

This access will expand after a three-year embargo period imposed by Newspapers.com, and we are counting the days!

Dear friends - we have the very best possible news to share! After years of anticipation and hard work, the 104-year run of the Cleveland Press has finally been digitized. This monumental achievement marks a significant milestone in preserving Cleveland's rich history and making it accessible to the public.

Details - and there is some fine print - are on the library's blog here:
https://researchguides.csuohio.edu/blogs/MSL-buzz/cleveland-press

This has been a long, hard struggle, and we are so grateful to our supporters here and all over the world, who have advocated - insisted - for this to happen. The wider availability of this resource will literally change history. Thank you all.
