The Happy Dog is a neighborhood corner bar in the best sense of the term. We've got hot dogs and beer, and lots of live music, from rock and country to punk and polka. The bartenders are friendly and the bar itself is open and inviting - a racetrack oval wood bar, with plenty of old chrome barstools. It's not retro because it's pretty much unchanged from the time the Socotch family built the place

Some days, it really sucks to be a small business owner. Our insurance company blanket denied all claims for spoilage and loss of business income at the Happy Dog due to the power outage after the tornado.
We were without power for five days, lost all our product, and it took us two days to restock and reopen, so that’s a week of business on top of all the lost inventory.
We have coverage for both spoilage & loss of business income (we opted for “broad” coverage over basic). And we are covered for loss or damage for “windstorms” but they knew they were facing a bunch of claims coming out of the storm and had the letter drafted denying coverage before the adjuster ever called us.
First claim in 15 years (we knew all the insurance companies were denying coverage for mandated covid closures, so we never even tried filing for that claim).
Our friends at the NIVA Foundation stepped up with a grant from their Emergency Relief Fund (thank God for venue owners a looking out for each other!), but we’ll still be out about $20k in losses after it’s all said and done.
We know we aren’t the only small business here locally experiencing this - we hope we can find additional assistance, and are using all our advocacy and creativity skills developed over 16 years doing this work to find solutions.
But in the meantime, go to shows, bring friends, buy merch & gift cards, and most importantly, enjoy being out with your neighbors and friends, supporting local small businesses, the people who run them, and the folks who work there.
Great shows the next three nights - links in the comments.
We'll be at The Happy Dog tonight, welcoming folks back after being closed for a week due to the power outage from the storm. Come on out to all the small businesses that lost product and revenue due to the extended closure - and tip your bartenders and servers well, too!
We got power back this morning at The Happy Dog - it will take us a couple days to get all new product in to replace everything that went off, check all the equipment, prep & clean.
We reopen Tuesday at 4pm - we’d love to see everyone soon - got a lot of ground to make up for being closed all week…
