Water Safety Reminder for Families 💙

At Live Like Jake, we are committed to helping families stay safe around water. Personal flotation devices have important limitations every caregiver should understand:

• They are only Coast Guard approved when used on a water vessel—not as a swimming aid.
• They are not designed to help children learn to swim.
• They can create a false sense of security for children who do not yet know how to swim.
• They often position a child vertically in the water, which is the position most associated with drowning risk.
• They are never a substitute for constant, active adult supervision.

Flotation devices are not babysitters—your child still needs your full attention anytime they are in or near water.

The best protection is skill. Teach your child to become their own flotation device through high-quality self-rescue swim lessons.

Live Like Jake encourages families to research and enroll early—water safety skills save lives.

Most parents think swim lessons are just about preventing drowning. But research shows toddlers who start swimming early get 88% drowning protection PLUS something unexpected: enhanced brain development. Every stroke and kick creates cross-lateral movement that forces both sides of the brain to work together, literally wiring neural pathways for reading, focus, emotional control, and language skills.

When your child moves through water, they're doing more than learning to float. They're developing better balance, quicker problem-solving abilities, and stronger motor skills than kids who don't swim. The resistance of water challenges their body awareness and posture while building core strength. Studies consistently show early swimmers outperform their peers in cognitive tasks that require bilateral brain coordination.

Here's the hidden gem: floating and breath control naturally teach emotional regulation. When toddlers learn to stay calm in water and control their breathing, they're building real-world skills for handling stress and trying again when things get tough. Early swim lessons leverage your child's natural brain plasticity and lower fear levels, making skill acquisition easier and more confident. You're not just enrolling them in another activity - you're investing in their safety, cognitive development, and emotional resilience all at once.

A drowning can happen in as little as 21 seconds.

It’s quick and often silent. With summer almost here, ISR swim lessons are an important step in helping keep your child safer in the water.

🏊‍♀️ Survival Swim Isn’t Traumatic — Losing a Child Is.

Drowning is the #1 cause of death in
children ages 1–4.
It’s fast.
It’s silent.
And it’s preventable.

One of the most powerful tools we have to protect our children is survival swim lessons.
But many parents hesitate…
Because they’re afraid it might be traumatic.

Let’s talk about that.

💬 “Isn’t survival swim traumatic?”
It’s one of the most common concerns we hear — and it comes from a misunderstanding.

What survival swim is not:
It’s NOT throwing your child in and
hoping they figure it out
It’s NOT harsh or neglectful
It’s NOT about fear

✅ It is gentle.
✅ It is one-on-one.
✅ And it’s taught by certified instructors trained to work at your child’s pace — especially for babies and children with special needs.

🧠 Survival swim is actually very similar to ABA therapy:
• It uses structure and repetition
• It’s individualized
• It builds confidence and independence
• It teaches real-world, life-saving skills

🔹 What age can children start?
As early as 6 months old. Yes — even infants can learn to float and survive in water.

These lessons are short (10–15 minutes), consistent (4–5 days a week), and designed to build lifesaving muscle memory.

They’ll learn to:
• Hold their breath
• Roll to their back
• Float independently
• Swim to safety if developmentally ready

This isn’t swim team training.
This is about survival.

💔 You know what is traumatic?
➡️ Waking up and your child is gone.
➡️ Finding them at the bottom of a pool.
➡️ Planning a funeral instead of a birthday.

We know — because we’ve lived it.

We teach about survival swim in honor of Judah, Bodhi and so many other children who never got the chance to learn.

🌈 Survival swim saves lives.
It’s not cruel.
It’s not scary.
It’s a gift.
One that could mean the difference between tragedy… and a miracle.

Please don’t let fear or misinformation keep you from protecting your child.
