It’s easy for some to look at someone of a different gender, race, religion and see only the things they don’t have in common when what is most important is they see another person. One of the things I’m most proud of when it comes to music is the diversity of the people who support what I do. I hope that speaks to the inclusive nature of what create and who I am.

On this last day of Women’s History Month as well of Trans Visibility day I want to present you all with “People Too”. A song written with respect to women, immigrants, and trans individuals who the system has marginalized. This is a spiritual successor to Common’s song “The People” from 2007.

Initially this song was written and recorded in 2024 with me as a feature for another artist. The artist later decided not to put the song out as they felt it was too political and not a direction they wanted to lean into. I totally understand that as they were a younger artist not wanting to rock the boat. Given that I still asked if it was okay if I kept the song to release myself which they gave their blessing.

I am not an activist. I often write about my life and the times I live in. Unfortunately as a black man I often find myself having to write about injustice, systematic racism, and inequality because that is my life and the times I live in. This song was different though because I had no personal experience as the subject matter. Due to that I felt insecure about the authenticity of the message, but then I was reminded of how it takes allies in the streets to protest and not just the people impacted by necessary change.

It’s said when good people sit by idling and do nothing that’s all that’s needed for evil to prevail. I’ve got my art, a platform, and community I love and trust so I’d like to use that to step up. People Too is now available on Bandcamp at name your price. Any money the song generates will be donated to support the causes/rights of the groups noted in the song.
