For years, hospitals have relied on policies, witnesses, audits, reports, and, in some cases, video surveillance to strengthen diversion prevention.
Those tools may document activity.
But they do not always answer the most important question:
๐ช๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ ๐๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฑ?
That question is at the center of a new article co-authored by respected anesthesiologists and medication safety advocates Dr. Andrew Bowdle and Dr. Srdjan Jelacic:
โQuantitative Measurement of Controlled Substance Waste at the Point of Care Is the Killer App for Preventing Diversion.โ
The article raises an important point for anesthesia, pharmacy, compliance, and hospital leadership:
Controlled substance waste management cannot rely on documentation alone.
It needs objective data.
Drug identity.
Measured volume.
Point-of-care assay.
A documented record to support reconciliation.
That is exactly the gap the upcoming ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บโข (๐ฆ๐ช๐ฆ) is designed to address.
Designed to operate in conjunction with the ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐น ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บยฎ (๐ฆ๐๐ฆ), SWS brings controlled substance waste management closer to where the workflow actually happens โ at the point of care.
Because the future of controlled substance waste may not be more delayed follow-up.
It may be better measurement, better documentation, and better visibility in the moment.

The Supplier Showcase portion of ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ต ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ป๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ (๐๐๐ฃ) ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด may be over, but the most meaningful conversations are just beginning.
Today, our team had the opportunity to connect with pharmacy leaders from across the country about the growing operational pressures surrounding medication safety, controlled substance accountability, and reconciliation workflows.
One theme came through clearly:
The industry is looking beyond isolated tasks โ and focusing more on connected workflows.
Thatโs why the conversations around ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บโข (SWS) have been so important.
For years, hospitals have invested heavily in safer preparation and administration workflows. Now, attention is turning to the final step โ controlled substance waste and reconciliation โ where manual processes, delayed documentation, and fragmented visibility continue to create burden for pharmacy teams.
Preparation โ Administration โ Waste & Data for Reconciliation
Weโre looking forward to the next two days of one-on-one meetings and networking with Directors of Pharmacy to continue these discussions and better understand the challenges health systems are working to solve.
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see us.
SWS is FDA listed. Release expected Q4 2026.

In the operating room, medication safety doesnโt end at administration.
But historically, liquid controlled substance waste has remained one of the least structured parts of the workflowโmanual, inconsistent, and difficult to track.
๐ฆ๐ช๐ฆ is designed to address that challenge at the point of careโsupporting identification, measurement, assay, and documentation of liquid controlled substance waste as part of the workflow.
Waste is rendered non-retrievable and each event is documented, creating a compliant record that supports visibility, accountability, and required witness processes across perioperative care.
This recognition reflects something important:
Medication safety depends on consistency across the entire workflow.
And that process doesnโt stop at preparation or administrationโit extends through waste and documentation that supports reconciliation.
Thatโs where structure, visibility, and accountability matter most.
To our customers and partnersโthank you for your trust.
And to our teamโthis is your work.

But you donโt always have visibility into 100% of what happens in the OR.
That gapโbetween administration, waste, and reconciliationโis where time is lostโฆ and questions begin.
At ๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ฃ, ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ is bringing a new approach to that problem.
๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฒ ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บโข (๐ฆ๐ช๐ฆ) is designed for use in the anesthesia workspace at the point of careโhelping pharmacy gain clearer insight into controlled substance waste as part of the workflow, not after the fact.
For pharmacy teams, that means:
โ Real-time visibility into waste activity
โ Stronger, more complete documentation and chain of custody
โ Less time spent tracking down discrepancies
โ A more efficient path to reconciliation
No added burden on clinicians. No chasing paper trails later.
