Secondhand Mutts
Since 2006 with your help we have placed hundreds of dogs in great homes and continue to match owners with pets with success. In some cases we lower the fees.
FUNDING & ADOPTION FEES
Our adoption fees start at $200. The cost of the fee barely covers the expenses that are put into each dog in our program. On average the cost to vaccinate and de-worm a dog is $35-50, to neuter or spay is $55-100, flea and heartworm protect is $15-20. The dogs are also fed 3-5 meals per day in addition to boarding and fostering expenses. Normally, the adoption fee exceeds

Hoss has been waiting patiently for his forever home, and we honestly can’t figure out why! Hoss is the definition of a good boy. He’s a friend to every dog he meets and shows all the signs of being a gentle companion for cats and children too.
Hoss is house-trained, loves his kennel and walks like a total pro on a leash. He’s happy, laid back and looking for a family to call his own. So if you’re looking for a low-drama, high-love addition to the household, Hoss is waiting to meet you!

🖤🤎Please welcome our new-to-us arrival: Ivy
Wearing the red collar in the video of Ivy playing with Sam (available), Duke (in a trial home) and Getty (recently adopted) she is having an absolute blast with the big boys.
Ivy is 18 months old, spayed, up to date on vaccines, microchipped and social with dogs. She is NOT recommended for a home with cats or young children. Ivy is professionally and mobility-companion trained. Her previous owner utilized a wheelchair for mobility and fell ill and made the difficult decision to have her placed. She would appear to do best in a quiet home environment away from city distraction and noises.
We are accepting and screening new and previously submitted applications. We are getting to know her personality traits, energy and habits to match her with her next companion(s). To apply to adopt Ivy, Sam or Hoss visit our website. Please be patient: we are a 100% volunteer organization.

Please welcome Duke to the family. After a few weeks of decompression time with one of our dedicated foster providers Duke is ready to be matched to a forever home.
He is an almost 4 year old Doberman Pinscher, good with kids and would be an excellent family dog. Duke's prior owner passed away so it's taken him some time to adjust to this temporary phase. He gets along great with other dogs and knows basic commands.
Click the link below to learn more about Duke and apply to adopt him.

WELCOME HOSS! Big Daddy Hoss is exactly that....he's been a dad two times (that we know of) before we took his Lady-friend in alongside their eldest Coco (still available and looking for a home) and Lady and Hoss' 8 Doberbull puppies which have all been placed. Hoss has been well cared for and his owner made the right decision for him when she reached out to us as winter is approaching so we could find him a loving home. He and the family had been living with the shelter of a trailer in a rural area of Ohio when we agreed and quickly went into action to find a place for Lady, Coco and 8 puppies. Now that all the puppies have been placed space was available for Hoss to settle into foster care while we arrange for his neuter surgery and screen applicants to place him.
Foster Home Report: Hoss has been such a good boy, very friendly, no mess in his kennel potties outside, he had fleas when he arrived but he has since been given flea preventatives and flea baths with no sight of fleas as of October 10, 2025. Hoss is very laid back and calm. He would be a great companion for a lower activity type home but do well if he is placed in a home where he gets exercise and loads of attention. He's had a clean bill of health during his veterinary visit with Dr. Liz and Emily including his bloodwork coming back with no issues.

We got a 12 week foster update on our Doberbull boys who are still looking for their forever home.
Earl (green collar) is very playful. He just loves to explore and find things to play with. He pays a lot of attention to people and will come when he is called. He loves sleeping in our lap. He is a very nice puppy!
Carl (blue collar) is a little bit more laid back. He really likes to be with us and likes to follow us around. When he gets a bit nosey, he does come when he is called. He will sit next to us while watching TV and he just loves to be petted. He is such a good puppy! But really, they all are!
Brennan (orange collar) is probably the most attentive of all the boys, and he doesn't get easily distracted by things around him. He walks with us when we take him off leash and he just loves to play with toys and sticks. He is not afraid of the water and with a little training and patience, he would probably get in on his own to swim. Brennan is another great pup from this litter! Don't ever knock a mix, these are all great pups!
If one of these lovely pups sounds like the perfect fit for your family, please fill out an adoption application on our website.

PUPPY ALERT! Mid-June we were contacted by another rescue villager alerting us of a Doberman female that had just given birth and needed refuge. Her puppies were just a day old. We sprang into action finding a suitable and committed foster (thank you John and Charlotte) and the transport was arranged for their mom Lady and her 8 adorable newborn puppies to arrive. Along with the 9 canines we accepted Lady's daughter Coco from a previous litter who is also looking for a forever home.
Lady's puppies are ready to be placed in homes at 8 weeks of age (after Aug 6th). We have 4 females and 4 males to place. They are receiving their first booster and will advise all adopters of their booster and vaccine schedule for DHPP (distemper), Bordetella, De-Wormer and Rabies. The pups will be microchipped and registered to both Secondhand Mutts and each adopter accordingly.
Interested parties are encouraged to apply online (link in bio). We will only be arranging 'picks of the litter' to completed and approved applicants.
Previously approved applicants will be given preference to adopt. If you have adopted from Secondhand Mutts in the past or have an approved application on file please send an email to [email protected].
We ask everyone to be patient with our adoption process and reference screening as we are a volunteer organization and this does take time.

It's raining Doberman at Secondhand Mutts. Lorraine is a 3 year old female Doberman who was found stray in Lorain County then taken to the shelter with hopes her owners would recover her. At the time she arrived we had an opening with one of our most experienced Doberman foster providers and reached out to the shelter to take her in. After the legal hold period she was released to us to start her journey.
Lorraine was not spayed but since having her in our care she has received medical care, vaccines, a microchip and was spayed on June 25th. Now that she is fully recovered she is ready to be matched up with a family.
Lorraine gets along well with other dogs, both males and females. She is not friendly with cats therefore we will not place her in a home with cats for their safety.
If you are interested in adopting Lorraine please fill out the online adoption application.
