The past weekend, November 2nd-4th the team traveled to Chattanooga, TN to race at the Head of the H***H! Saturday was a beautiful day for racing where the team raced a Women’s Open 4 and a Men’s Novice 4. Both boats came off the water feeling exceptionally well after the race, leaving everything they had out on the water.
While not at the race course the team stayed at a lovely cabin in the forest, where some quality team bonding time was had!

As our seasons comes to end, keep a lookout for more updates as to what the team is up to between now and winter training. Today we are having our end of the year picnic and a boat christening- more updates to come about that soon!

The team had a fantastic time this past weekend in Columbus! We stayed the whole weekend and had some time for team bonding on Saturday. Saturday we had fun with a team challenge of Pumpkin Carving where each team of 3 had just 45min to come up with the most creative pumpkin. Later that night we went to the Hollinger's house for a delicious dinner and finished the night off with tie dying socks in JCU colors!
Sunday was race day at the Speakmon Memorial Regatta! We raced a Mixed Novice 8, Women's Novice 4, Men's Novice 4, Women's Varsity 4, and a Women's Open Pair! A huge congratulations goes out to the Mixed 8 for coming in 1st place and the WN4 for coming in 2nd place in their races and earning medals! During the day we were welcomed by many friends and family who came to cheer on the team, but a special thank you goes out to Lauren Penkala and her parents for bringing breakfast and lunch for the team! We appreciate all the love and support from all!
Look out for us this upcoming weekend as we head to Chattanooga, TN for the H***H!

The team was on the move this weekend. We traveled to Rochester, New York for the Head of the Genesee Regatta. We raced a Women's Varsity 4, Women's Novice 8 and a Men's Novice 4. The WV4 was able to shave off 2+ minuets from their previous race time and it was the novice crews' very first race! We are very proud of all of the hard work the team put in this weekend. On Friday night the team was graciously hosted by the LaMar family where they fed us dinner and let us stay over. On Saturday night the Terzioglu family made us a delicious post race meal. A HUGE thank you to all the support from these families and the other families who came to show support this weekend! We love to see some fans out there showing the team some love! Stay tuned for the rest of the season for more updates on what we are up to!

The team has been busy this past week! This past Saturday, September 15th our WV4 raced in the Head of the Cuyahoga at the Cleveland Rowing Foundation. It was a beautiful day for a home race! The new recruits also learned a team favorite game- Dirty Rotten Apple!

Last night the team participated in a community service event partnering with HandsOn Northeast Ohio, helping paint their new office space. The place looks great thanks to the hard work put in by the team!

This morning we had a Learn to Row followed by a team lunch at Merwins Wharf next to the boathouse. A perfect fall morning for rowing and building community!

Several members of the John Carroll University Rowing Team helped to paint the Society of St. Vincent de Paul - Cleveland’s Community Corner food pantry and distribution site, located along the Detroit-Shoreway. A huge thank you to HandsOn Northeast Ohio and former coach Lauren Penkala, who helped to coordinate the service activity by planning, managing and providing project supplies for the team to use. It was a great way to give back to the community, offered an opportunity to bond with each other, as we prepare for The Hammer Ergatta at Case Western Reserve University held on February 25th!

The men and women of the John Carroll University Crew team had a very strong showing at the 2017 Head of the H***h Regatta in Chattanooga, Tennessee over the weekend! The men finished 28th of 58 boats at 18:28.91. This was their fastest 5k time of the season. The men also finished within 10% of the top time, guaranteeing them an entry in next year's race. The women finished 2nd of 10 boats in the lightweight four category. Finishing with a 19:44.07, this also guarantees an entry for next year. Congratulations men and women! First time in a very long time JCU medaled at a race this large!!

To our seniors, Aita Coker, Lea Breedlove and Attison McCarthy in the boats, thank you for making a very tangible future impact on this team. We'll see you in 2018 Chattanooga.

Congratulations to James LaMar and Lauren Synek successfully finishing the first season as collegiate crew coaches! Goodbye to coach Lauren PK Penkala and good luck with the new job!

Service is such an important part of the John Carroll University tradition! Some members of the team last night participated in the Labre Program on campus, serving warm dinners to the homeless all around the city. Way to go everyone, keeping the tradition strong!! 😀

Tom Reilley we are so sad to see you go! In the 6 years you served the John Carroll University rowing team as a Faculty Advisor, you helped us buy and sell equipment like boats, oars, and trailers. You were there for every big event and fundraiser. In times we weren't exactly sure how much money we had to muster through the end of the year, you always made our lives a little easier by checking our balances and talking us through our budget. Every fall, you worked alongside the team to help new freshman move into the dorms. You also came out to a team bonding day and brought delicious cookies. One time, you and your wife even rowed (picture proof - yes, it happened)!

Thank you is not enough for all that you have done for this team. These 6 years have flown by, but you have made such a profound mark on the lives of the coaches and athletes, and the overall culture of the team.

This is definitely not goodbye, it is see you later. There is plenty of water in Florida; meaning, we see spring training and warm regattas in our future. Thank you Tom, for everything. We miss you already!!

On Saturday the team raced at the Head of the Genesee Regatta in Rochester, New York! Many of the novice had their very first fall race. Aside from the Head of the H***h, this is the most challenging competition we see this season. Congratulations to the women who took 3rd in the Women's Collegiate 4! Official regatta results here:https://www.regattacentral.com/regatta/results/5070_9140.pdf

A special thank you to First Presbyterian Church of Pittsford staff and parishioners for housing us over the weekend. We were so comfortable, and sincerely appreciate your willingness to take us in for the night!

Also, thank you family and friends for coming out to the race and showing your support. Thank you for all of the extra food and help cheering. A big thank to Jillian Mooney's family for the delicious team dinner after the race! It was awesome.

In three weekends, we will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Speakmon Memorial Regatta. Stay tuned!
