Opening Reception - Don't Forget!!

Join us at the Gallery for the opening of the ASG’s exhibit “Road Kill” Friday October 2nd from 5:30pm-8pm!

Road Kill is a collection of artwork about aspects of life that have disappeared, been destroyed, or seem insignificant. Our initial reaction might be Does it even matter? The answer might be Yes.

ASG are 7 artists; painters, bookmakers, quilters, and printmakers who have been meeting once a month for over 20 years to talk about their art and creative processes. They support each other's ideas, offer critiques, ask questions, and sometimes eat cookies.

We have introduced several of the ASG members, but stay tuned for the remaining introductions before the show begins!

Pinwheel Gallery is proud to present Leslie Nichol, one of the fantastic artists in “Road Kill” (Opening 10/2/2026)!!

Leslie says:
I graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art in 1984 with an Agnes Gund Memorial Traveling Scholarship Award. After months of travel I settled in Philadelphia for several years where I actively showed my work. I returned to Cleveland in 1995. Since then I have continued to show my work on occasion. I have paintings in several private and public collections including Metro Health and The Cleveland Clinic.

When roadkill was introduced as a theme for our group show, I was reluctant to embrace the idea. After some thought, I considered the figurative sense of the word. The precariousness of life has been a running theme in my work for years. Every move we make has the possibility of being a roadkill decision.
Approaching the subject from the literal sense of the word felt gruesome. But this show gave me the opportunity to honor the victims of roadkill as creatures worthy of attention in a way that I enjoyed painting.

Laura Says:
I graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art in %$ #@. It took about 6 months to realize commercial photography was not for me, so I got an art-adjacent job in nonprofit membership marketing. Today, I’m the executive director of a national nonprofit that educates curious people about herbs and how to use them. Do I draw and paint a lot of herbs? Yes! Do they always look like herbs? No.

I started painting again after many years of pursuing photography for pleasure and occasional, paid design work. I’ve learned that it’s completely okay to simply create beautiful things because you want to live with them. Because they make you calm and hopeful. Because you admire a yellow calix or the bend of the stem.
The “Road Kill” theme gave me the opportunity to focus on a concept rather than colors or values. And I struggled with that for months. Then I realized that I didn’t have to change my subject matter at all.
The most profound threat to every living thing in the US is the current administration and its billionaire puppeteers.
Bulldozing Big Bend and boxing off the Rio Grande; selling off pieces of Yosemite to tech bros; changing the definition of “HARM” in the endangered species act to allow additional mining, logging and data center construction. This is Road Kill on a national scale.

Pinwheel Gallery is proud to present Christine Hahn, one of the fantastic artists in “Road Kill” (Opening 10/2/2026)!!

Christine Hahn has been in graphic design for decades but enjoys making ‘real art’ like printmaking and painting with watercolor. She also creates sarcastic embroidery and rug punching fiber art.

Christine says:
My pieces are about the loss of “safe” as a girl and the slow realization that vulnerability does not make you worthy of protection. Like roadkill, one’s innocence becomes something the world can pass over, look away from, and leave behind.

Pinwheel Gallery is proud to present Amy Fishbach, one of the fantastic artists in “Road Kill” (Opening 10/2/2026)!!

Amy Fishbach has been an artist and art educator in Cleveland, Ohio for the past 40 years. She graduated Summa cm laude from Ursuline College with a major in Fine Arts.
As the head of the Elementary Art Department at the Agnon School in Beachwood for 27 years, she developed all their K-4 art curriculum. In this position she won the 2003 Art Educator of the Year Award given by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio.
Fishbach is one of the three co-founders of ABC: Art Books Cleveland, an organization dedicated to promoting the Book Arts in the region.
As a printmaker and Artist’s Book artist she has shown her work throughout Greater Cleveland.

Amy says:
If someone had told me when I was college majoring in Fine Arts that I would end up as a textile artist, or worse, a quilter, I would have been appalled.
At that time, I was still under the influence of the patriarchal view that Fine Art=Real Art and Everything Else=Low Art or [Lowly] Craft.
And then…Gee’s Bend. I saw the iconic show of those African American quilts at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and it changed everything for me. The Gee’s Bend quilts made my head explode. Bold colors and wildly creative, idiosyncratic, rule-breaking patterns and design. These were, “some of the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced.”
My main thought was, “If this is what quilting can be, sign me up!” I fulfilled a dream to study in Gee’s Bend for a week with one of the masters, Loretta Pettway Bennett.
Before improvisational quilting, I was an Artist’s Book artist for many years. I am still dedicated to that art form and often feel torn between Book Art and Quilt Art.
For this show at Pinwheel, I have finally tried something that I put off for way too long; in my piece, “I’m Here Because the Condom Broke,” I have combined my two art passions. I consider it both an Artist’s Book and what I’m calling a Conceptual Quilt.
I hope to continue along these lines for a long time to come.

Have you ever looked at one of your art pieces and thought “If only I had a second pair of eyes – or six pair! – then I would know what I need to do to make this better!” Well, ASG, a group of seven artists, have been meeting for monthly for over two decades to do just this.

As we always say, Art Builds Community, and we can't wait to host this group, which embodies that to a T having built these bonds for more than 20 years!!

Come see how their practices have grown, ask them questions about their art and their group, and celebrate the opening of their show, "Road Kill" Friday, October 2nd from 5:30pm to 8pm!
