When I founded DRM in 2014, I had nothing to lose.

Dallas Riffle is President and Creative Director of Dream Team Marketing, where he leads brand strategy, creative direction, and campaigns designed to drive real business results. On my first day in business, I wrote a post-it note and slapped it on the wall above the laptop I worked from in the bedroom of my tiny studio apartment in Birdtown, Lakewood, Ohio. That note said "What are you grateful for today?" I put my hand on that note, thought of my daughters, took a deep breath and got to work. Today, that same post-it note hangs above the entrance to DRM, where my employees and I come to work every day, ready to discover what awaits us. I put my hand on that note every morning when I arrive, remember the moment I first wrote it, and look forward to all the great moments that lie ahead.

A (slightly tongue in cheek) cut sheet provided by the Dream Team. Friday food for your brain! 🧠

Here's a quick marketing emoji translation guide:

📈 = "Things are going well."
🔥 = "Things are going very well."
🤔 = "We should probably look at the analytics."
😬 = "Who approved this ad?"
📊 = "Now we're talking."

No matter how you communicate it, data still beats guessing.

This is my little place of solace. A tiny corner of Earth where I can truly step away.

I put a lot of effort into to creating it, enjoyed it for a season, then a lot changed with my business within a very short time, and the little place of solace went neglected. While I worked day and night, the hot tub collapsed in on itself, the furniture rusted, mold obscured the stones, and the lights flickered out.

Before I knew it, I hadn't taken the time to step away and rest for two whole years.

That ended this summer. For the first time in a long time, I set aside a weekend to work, but this time for myself. Power washed stone, fresh sanded grout, new hot tub and furniture, and the lights are back on.

My little place of solace is alive again.

I reminded myself that life is more than work, and I am more than my business... and I don't intend to forget that again. We all deserve a place to relax, reset, show gratitude, and just BREATHE.

If you want to connect with humans, speak human! 🗣️

Somewhere, right now, a marketer is writing:
"Leveraging synergistic solutions to maximize stakeholder engagement."

Meanwhile, customers are just trying to figure out what that means.

Use words people use.

Revolutionary concept, we know.

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Dana Allender, founder of SUN - We Grow You to create and conduct "Scalable Digital Marketing and Sales," a course for area small business owners, in partnership with JumpStart Inc. covering marketing, sales and the importance of the two working together to build awareness, educate and convert leads into valuable opportunities. Can't wait until our next collab! 🙌🏼

I'll be returning to JumpStart to teach the second cohort of Social Media Deep Dive 2.0 starting next month. Teaching is something I've always wanted to explore, and I must say I'm enjoying it as much as I'd hoped to, and then some!

Final Truth: A Good Agency Isn’t an Emotional Crutch. It’s a Catalyst.

If you want comfort, get a weighted blanket. If you want validation, call your mom. If you want growth – real growth – get ready to be challenged.

Marketing isn’t therapy, it’s transformation.

It asks you to:

☑️ detach your ego
☑️ embrace data
☑️ let go of what’s not working
☑️ trust the process
☑️ allow experts to do what they do best

If you’re ready for that, you’re ready for real marketing. And if you’re not, no agency in the world can fix it.

Dream Team Marketing loves clients that can handle hearing the hard truth for one reason: we want your brand to grow. Not stagnate. Not coast. Not survive, but grow. That means giving you clarity instead of comfort, direction instead of flattery, and strategy instead of sugarcoating. We’re not here to pat you on the back. We’re here to push you forward. Because the brands that win aren’t protected from the truth – they’re powered by it.

Hard Truth #7: Growth Requires Discomfort – For You and Your Brand

Every breakthrough starts with tension.

This is true in fitness, business, creativity, and yes, branding.

If you feel uncomfortable during a rebrand or campaign development, that’s usually a good sign.

It means you’re stretching and stepping into new territory. You’re testing a version of your brand that is bolder, sharper, more effective.

Comfort zones don’t create category leaders. They create category followers.

Brands that dominate their space embrace discomfort as part of the process.

Hard Truth #6: Strategy Comes Before Aesthetics – Every Time

Beautiful design can’t fix a broken strategy. Clever copy can’t compensate for a confusing offer. A cinematic video can’t salvage a weak brand position.

But many brands approach marketing backwards:

• Start with aesthetics
• Force the strategy to fit
• Hope nobody notices
• The problem? Everyone notices.

Audiences can feel when marketing is all frosting and no cake and they sense when something looks good but lacks substance.

A strategic brand knows the order:
Strategy → Positioning → Messaging → Creative → Ex*****on

When brands try to reverse that order, everything wobbles. This is why agencies sometimes say “no” to design choices clients love. It’s not sabotage – it’s stewardship.

You hired experts to build something that works. Let them.

Hard Truth #5: Your Favorite Idea Might Be the Worst Option

Let’s talk about the creative heartbreak that happens in every campaign cycle: You fall in love with a concept.

You think:
This is it.
This is the one.
This is the idea that will define us.

Then the agency politely tells you: “It’s not strategically strong.”

And suddenly you feel betrayed and misunderstood. You feel like the agency “doesn’t get it.”

But here’s what’s really happening:

The agency is protecting you from burning money on something that won’t convert.

Good marketing isn’t about indulging the ego. It’s about investing in what delivers results.

My entire career, I've used the analogy that your website is your hardest-working employee. It communicates your message to your prospects and clients, serves up the content, products and services they need, and extends a virtual handshake... and it's on duty 24/7/365. This has never been truer! Remember: your site isn't a set-it-and-forget-it fixed asset - it should evolve over time. Make time to revisit it on a regular basis and note where improvements can be made!

Your website is having conversations with customers right now.

Is it saying: "We get you! Here's how we can help."
Or:
"Last updated in 2019. Good luck finding anything."

Your website works 24/7 so make sure it's saying the right things while you're asleep.
