At the helm, you’re not just steering—you’re reading the water.

🌬️ Watch the wind first—know where it’s coming from

👀 Look ahead—always scan what’s coming
🤝 Communicate with your crew—boat speed is teamwork

Good helming is about awareness, not constant movement.

Taking the helm for the first time? Here's a quick tip:

A tiller and a wheel both steer the boat, but they feel very different. With a tiller, you move the handle in the opposite direction you want the boat to turn.

Want to go right? Push the tiller left. With a wheel, you turn it in the direction you want the boat to go—just like driving a car.

The best part? After a few minutes on the water, it becomes second nature!

This week we ran three sailing classes on Lake Erie, and it was great getting more people out on the water and into sailing. Watching new sailors build confidence and learn the feel of the wind is what it’s all about.

Lake Erie gave us a mix of conditions that made each session a great learning experience. Big thanks to everyone who showed up ready to learn and take on the challenge.
