Meet John Merrick.
Born into slavery in 1859, Merrick later became a barber, entrepreneur, and visionary businessman. In 1898, he co-founded North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company — because Black families were being denied life insurance coverage.
Instead of waiting for access…
He built it.
North Carolina Mutual went on to become the largest Black-owned life insurance company in the world.
Why does this matter?
Because life insurance has always been about more than a policy.
It’s about dignity.
It’s about protection.
It’s about keeping wealth inside our communities.
The same tool that was once denied to us
is now one of the greatest tools for generational wealth.
Legacy isn’t accidental.
It’s intentional.
