Never know what you might find down the rabbit hole?
Haunted doll? Yeah, we’ve got that.
About five or six months ago, something strange found its way into mill.
An elderly couple stopped at the old Woolen Mill while passing through Cleveland. Their truck was packed full of items some they had picked up along their way from Louisiana. They were selling everything off for next to nothing, just trying to lighten the load. As we looked through the mix of odds and ends, one thing caught my eye immediately. An old doll.
There was something about her. I cannot really explain it, but she seemed to call out for attention. I asked about her, and for the first time the couple hesitated. The woman especially seemed uneasy. She told me she did not like the feeling she got from the doll and was not sure she wanted to sell her at all.
Of course, that only made me want her more. After a little back and forth, she finally agreed and told me the story. They had recovered the doll from a home that had burned. Not just from anywhere in the house, but from the exact spot where the fire had started. Everything around her was destroyed, but the doll was completely untouched.
The strange part was what came after. The woman said the doll did not always smell like smoke. Only sometimes.
I brought her back to the shop, and like a lot of things, she ended up sitting quietly in a corner and was mostly forgotten.
Until the smell started.
At first it was faint, easy to dismiss. Then it got stronger. A heavy smoky scent that would come and go without any clear reason. We checked everything. Nothing.
Eventually we traced it back to her.
Here is where it gets even stranger. Whenever she is noticed, picked up, or even just talked about, the smell fades. Almost completely. But when she is ignored for too long, it comes back again.
So now we make sure she gets her attention.
And we are starting to wonder if maybe that is exactly what she wants. Come have a visit with Lillian. We promise she’ll behave.
