🍇 Grape Agate Takes the Win! 🍇
By a margin of 16 votes, Grape Agate has officially defeated Black Tourmaline in our Crystal Madness bracket!

Despite its name, Grape Agate isn't technically an agate at all. It's actually a botryoidal variety of quartz, meaning it forms in clusters of tiny, rounded spheres that resemble bunches of grapes.

This unique material gained worldwide attention after deposits discovered in Indonesia began entering the mineral market in the late 2010s. Its gorgeous purple color comes from trace mineral impurities.

With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, Grape Agate is as durable as it is beautiful, making it a favorite among collectors and lapidary enthusiasts alike.

If you've ever walked the rocky shores of Lake Superior in Minnesota, you've probably heard of Thomsonite.

Thomsonite was first described in Scotland in 1820 and was later discovered in Minnesota in 1878, where it became one of the state's most sought-after gemstones. Its unique bands of white, pink, red, green, yellow, and black form as the mineral fills cavities within ancient basalt lava flows.

While Thomsonite is strongly associated with Minnesota, true Thomsonite is quite rare on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula. Many of the similar-looking rounded zeolite nodules found in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are actually Mesolite and Natrolite rather than Thomsonite. These minerals belong to the same zeolite family and can share a similar appearance, leading to frequent misidentifications.

Whether you're a Lake Superior rockhound or simply appreciate beautiful geology, Thomsonite is a fascinating reminder of the volcanic history hidden beneath the Great Lakes.
