A common challenge of being a caregiver to a parent is getting them to accept professional support at home.
Try these tips:
• Emphasis that your parent is still in control. An aide can put groceries away, while mom decides where everything goes.
• Explain how this support will help them maintain their independence by driving them to places they want to go.
• Focus on the idea that chores have become more difficult, suggesting that your parent can now supervise while someone else does the heavy lifting.
• Start small. Bring an aide in on a trial basis, to get your parent acclimated to the idea.
• Consider using positive language, many of our clients call their StarPoint caregivers “assistants” or “friends.”
