Today in LGBTQ+ History: On June 26th, 2015, the Supreme Court ruling on Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.

Jim Obergefell, an American civil rights activist and Ohio native, was named plaintiff in the case. He sought to have his marriage to his late husband, John Arthur, recognized by the state of Ohio so Jim could be listed on his death certificate. Because of Jim's unwavering commitment to honoring his late husband, same-sex couples in the United States have equal marriage rights. Love is love!

On Tuesday, June 9, at the PFLAG monthly meeting, five deserving students received $2,000 scholarships for their college education. This year’s recipients are Aubrey Stephens, Eileen Dowd, Charlie Giraud, Evelyn Hayberger, and Gracyn Kent.
The scholarship program, which began in 1992, has now awarded 176 scholarships and over $262,000 to deserving students since its inception. The Scholarship Committee, chaired by Dan Ley, selected the winning students. Committee members included AustinHopkins and Julie Shaw. The Committee based its selections on the applicants’ academic record, activities, future plans, and references. Special emphasis was placed on students who help to fulfill the PFLAG missions of providing support, education, and advocacy in the community.

PFLAG thanks these organizations and individuals for their contributions and looks forward to continuing success in supporting deserving students.

Today is the 6 year anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Bostock v. Clayton County, which determined that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects LGBTQ+ employees from workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
