"My goal as an artist is to create works that reveal injustice and show beauty." – Betye Saar. She celebrated her 99th birthday in July. Betye Saar is considered one of the leading contemporary assemblage artists, known for works addressing racism, identity, and spirituality, while reinterpreting cultural symbols related to Black women. She began her artistic journey in the 1960s, using everyday objects and found materials to create pieces reflecting her personal experiences and cultural history. One of her most famous works is The Liberation of Aunt Jemima (1972), which transformed a stereotypical negative image into a symbol of strength and resistance. In 2025, she founded the Betye Saar Legacy Group in collaboration with Roberts Gallery in Los Angeles to preserve and document her artistic legacy.

In 2019 I did this self portrait, reflecting on my life in the mid 70s.

The exhibit runs from November 15 through December 14th.
