OGRE

A number of years back I made a series called Melancholy Androids.

I invented an imaginary ancient alien race. Quiet. Lonely. Somewhere between spiritual and mechanical, magic and technology. They were a way to explore what depression feels like from the inside. Not to explain it, just to give it a shape.

The series is mostly digital illustrations. This one I painted. Projected the drawing, then built it up with spray paint and acrylic. It's the largest physical piece from the series.

Still one of my favorites.

There is so much to find in the details.

Sometimes they are chaotic and unexpected.

Sometimes calculated to a tee.

Beauty finds me when I slow down to look.

Where does your search for ideas lead you?

I will diverge and look as far and wide as possible. Form, feeling, and fun. I like to test my ideas against my own ideas.

Sometimes a sharper image comes out in the direction I thought the project was going, sometimes the project takes a 180 degree turn. Other times I find multiple thoughts that feel important to follow and one idea turns into 2 or many.

This cactus search is looking more and more like an idea that will produce multiple results.

I have always been creatively inspired by animals. The turtle has become, like his shell, something I have carried with me through many of my creative seasons in life, and one i expect to come back around again.

My first 3d printed turtle sculpture was in 2009.

The idea keeps going. I just keep letting it change.

Life's seasons change, but we carry many things through them. One idea has followed through them all.

My own mortality. Not as a fear. Not as a comfort. Just as a constant. A truth I keep returning to.

Mr. Death Snail wears it on his back.

We humans have been trying to explain this idea forever. Every culture, every era, every tradition. Something that vast and that certain and that far outside our understanding. It pushes you to think bigger. To let go of what you can't control. To find something like peace in how small you are, but at the same time how deep and vast this experience can be.

The body knows before the brain does. I'm still learning to listen.

The blue heron is a special bird. It is calm, graceful, and patient.

Whenever I catch a sighting, I feel a sense of awe and peace.
