A waitlist for 24/7 care for Colorado adults with disabilities is 7 years long. State cuts could double it. After years of trying to clear the waitlist for the adult developmental disabilities waiver, this year’s budget crisis could double it

The Autistic Self Advocacy Network Shares "When states need to make budget cuts, Medicaid waivers are one of the things that are cut first. In Colorado, state budget cuts may double the already long wait time for services. This is just from the state's budget shortfall, the federal Medicaid cuts aren't yet making an impact. "

America 250: The history of American disability rights and healthcare access - WTOP News 06/11/2026

America 250: The history of American and healthcare access by Acacia James | [email protected]

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, reflecting on advances in civil rights highlights the importance of healthcare equity for all Americans. One of the most transformative laws in American history is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law by George H.W. Bush in 1990. The marked a turning point in ensuring that people with disabilities are not excluded from essential services — including healthcare and oral health.
Before the ADA, people with disabilities often faced widespread discrimination in medical settings. Many healthcare facilities lacked basic accessibility features. Progress started with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibited disability discrimination in federally funded programs, including hospitals and clinics. However, protections were limited and gaps in access were still significant.
