Sometimes the universe makes you understand your why by looking back at your past. This video was from 2021 for a project I was working on.
This dissertation life is very overwhelming, especially when you are dealing with residual effects from my stroke. This video made me get teary and understand why I can do this thing called a dissertation.
Tomorrow, I celebrate my second birthday, which marks the introduction of Camilla 2.0. On January 30, 2022, I suffered a transient ischemic attack, aka a mini-stroke. It took time, patience, tears, and determination to reach a place of gratitude, resilience, and understanding of life.
I am glad to still be here fulfilling my purpose. ♥️😁🤟🏾

As a little girl, I often dreamed of speaking to professionals, students, and the community about my life with Microtia and Atresia. Also, I dream of creating a community of shared experiences, which we need now.
A little Black girl with a vision grew up to become a Black woman who embraced my deafness and rarity.
Don't stop dreaming!

Today is Rare Disease Day (or Rare Condition)
I represent the 0.83 and 4.43 cases of Microtia per 10,000 births.
I represent the prevalence of Aural Atresia, which is estimated at 1 in 10,000 to 20,000 births.
I also represent 7-21% of bilateral cases.
Additionally, I represent 0.73 cases of Microtia per 10,000 births among non-Hispanic Black individuals.
I am rare, rare, rare, and rare!!!
Don't be ashamed of your rarity. One day, you just learn how to embrace it!
