Community Matters exists to create a thriving and more just community with our neighbors.

Community Matters exists to create a thriving and more just community by removing barriers to opportunity. Community Matters grew from the ideas and strengths of the Lower Price Hill community, and we are firmly committed to growing opportunities from within. We believe that a thriving and more just community exists when all people have sustainable families, access to education, leadership opportunities, and vibrant spaces to live and work.

“I’m getting comfortable being uncomfortable.”

Lissette Robinson-Young is most comfortable in a routine, so each new step has taken courage. She walked onto our campus as a teenager to begin studying for her GED. She later joined our staff. Then she pursued an associate degree at Cincinnati State.

This fall, she will take another courageous step when she begins pursuing a degree at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.

An avid writer from a family of medical professionals, Lissette was drawn to mortuary science because it brings together science, art, and care. The solitary nature of the work also fits her introverted personality.

“It is restorative work, which is important to me,” she said.

That combination of empathy, self-awareness, and determination helped Lissette earn a scholarship from our partners at The Chatfield Edge, which supports nontraditional students as they pursue postsecondary studies.

“She demonstrates care for the community, which is an idea we try to foster in our scholars, but she still is focused on her educational journey,” said David Hesson, director of programs at The Chatfield Edge. “I was impressed by Lissette’s drive from our very first meeting, and I am confident in her ability to achieve her goals and her future success.”

We are proud of Lissette and grateful for partners like The Chatfield Edge who help adult learners continue moving toward what comes next.
