Diesel fumes can travel throughout the station long after apparatus operations end. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies diesel engine exhaust as a Group 1 carcinogen linked to lung cancer, with positive associations to bladder cancer.

To help reduce exposure risks, Holland Fire Department Station No. 1 installed seven (7) SFTMPRO exhaust removal systems designed to capture diesel exhaust directly at the source.

Firefighters spend long shifts inside the station between emergency responses. During that time, airborne particles introduced during apparatus operations can remain present in apparatus bays and shared spaces.

Recent research by NCBI - National Center for Biotechnology Information examining European firefighters found that non-genetic factors common in the job, such as air pollution, heat stress, physical and mental strain, and circadian disruption, have a stronger influence on immune and inflammatory responses than hereditary factors.
