Before and after of two custom showers for the same clients. One was a tub shower converted to a shower stall. The other was a new custom shower to replace the existing footprint but I built a custom shower bench with an adjacent pony wall. Installed new Delta universal valves with 3 function diverter for both. Custom shower glass by Miller Glass. Here’s what my wonderful clients had to say…
“Andy remodeled 2 showers for us and we couldn’t be happier. His work is beautiful and his attention to detail and problem solving are impressive. Andy is well organized, communicates effectively and is very respectful of your home. His professionalism makes him a pleasure to work with. Bonus that he was wonderful with our dog, who looked forward to his arrival every day!” - Jim and Sheri Reilley
The best tile layout starts with framing and rough-in plumbing. The wall-to-wall shelf was framed so that its height would establish at a full row of tile (no sliver cuts!). Likewise, the heights of the shower valve and the shower head are located where horizontal and vertical grout joints intersect. The subway tile on the long wall above the shelf starts with a full row of tile above the quartzite shelf and ends with a full row terminating at the ceiling. All of these details are determined before framing and rough-in plumbing commences. The details matter!

I was in the middle of an extensive master bath remodel for some really nice north Chico
homeowners when the 2018 Camp Fire started. They invited me back in 2022 to remodel their guest bathroom - shown here.

Finishing touches. Color matching sanded caulking in the corners and where metal corner shelves sit in grout joints.
For those who wonder why I tile the shower walls first and build the shower pan last, it’s because it allows me to utilize the space within the shower to mix thinset, place tools, and generally move around without harming a fragile shower pan. It allows me to contain an otherwise messy environment in an area that does not impact my clients. I have found over the years that this is the best method. Once the walls are done I can focus on the pan tile and grout and then be done with the project, allowing my clients to pretty much be the first ones to step around in their fancy new shower stall.
