Credit Card Skimmers- How to Avoid Being Scammed

We’ve recently recovered several card-skimming devices from local merchants. Here’s how you can spot the signs and protect your money before scammers get their hands on it.

• Inspect the reader: Check ATMs, gas pumps, and store terminals for loose, crooked, or damaged parts before inserting or swiping your card.
• Do the wiggle test: Pull or tug on the card reader slot; if it feels loose or moves, a fake overlay skimmer may be attached.
• Shield your PIN: Cover the keypad with your free hand when typing your PIN to block hidden cameras or fake keypad overlays. Or, run your debit card as a credit card.
• Avoid magnetic stripes: If you cannot tap to pay, use the EMV chip reader rather than swiping the magnetic stripe.
• Pay Inside: Consider paying inside with the attendant, not outside at the pump.
• Visibility: Choose a fuel pump that is closer to the store and in direct view of the attendant. These pumps are less likely to be targets for skimmers.
• Monitor accounts: Check your bank statements weekly rather than monthly to catch unauthorized charges early.
