Chico State Sheep
Chico State Sheep Unit offers hands on learning in modern livestock production, producing quality lambs for youth projects and the Meats Lab.
Managed by students and staff- fostering leadership and agricultural education. The Chico State Sheep Unit is part of the California State University, Chico College of Agriculture. The Unit is housed on our University Farm that consists of about 800 acres. Our farm raises beef cattle (Red Angus, Angus and Hereford seedstock), project pigs (we have an annual Swine Educational Day in late January),
As the spring 2026 semester has closed out, we say goodbye to our graduates and prepare for incoming students!
Oh - and we have lambs for late summer/fall fairs available! Priced reasonably, come take a look and see what works for you!

WOOHOO! Congratulations to our graduating senior and lead shepherd, Sophia Benitez! She is graduating from Chico State with honors in Animal Science. I (Celina) remember when Sophia came up to me at FFA Conference and told me she was coming to Chico State and wanted to work at the sheep unit - so glad we got her involved. She plans to head to New Mexico State and work towards a Master's degree in Animal Science. Fiercely independent and hard working, Sophia has left a lasting impression after her 4 years at the Patton Family Sheep Unit at Chico State! She has lived the Chico State motto of "Do and Dare".
We will be finishing up with our private treaty lambs this afternoon. Those that have reached out will be sent a link to view over the weekend before we post publicly. Prices will range from 400-maybe 700.

Whew, breeding season is upon us! AI day is Friday so we have late September fall born lambs for May fairs in 2027! This year we are featuring the following AI sires:
Delbert from Estes Show Lambs - we can't wait to see the lambs out of this son of Company Man! He is gorgeous on the profile, but with a lot of muscle! Not many holes to pick in this one and I think will just make consistent good ones!
Potentially Dangerous is a natty FF ram that is Ride Time x Drop The Mic - he lines up well on some of smaller, thicker ewes to bring some elevation and extension as well as some bone to lambs.
We have a handful of staws left on Follow Me from Fairley's! We have a keeper ram lamb out of Follow Me from our January lambs (don't worry - pics will be coming)! Follow Me is Cocky Rocky x Unicorn and I am sure hoping for some ewe lambs this fall to keep!
On the Southdown side, we reached out to Forsee's and have some Royal Flush semen. He is sired by The One out of a War Admiral daughter. We want to tighten up some of our Southdown genetics and lining back up with Forsee genetics that are as consistent and proven as any out there is what we think will accomplish our goals!
Rounding out our Southdowns is another Forsee buck, Swamp Cat. He is Mass Appeal by Eclipse and sure puts a lot of nice pieces together.

Got a chance to see a few of the Chico State lambs showing at Tehama County Fair tomorrow in Red Bluff! Ava Mackey has a Backseat Driver x Heavy (DTM) wether, and Ana and Isaac Bernal have Backseat Driver and Real High wethers. Lambs look good and best wishes on a great show tomorrow and sale on Saturday!
Where has the past few months gone!? We are weaning our January/February lambs and will be getting some pictures. We hope to have around 20 lambs available for August and later fairs!! This group is probably our most consistent group of lambs we have had! Stay tuned for more info!
