A little CAD, a little 3D printing, a lot of test fitting.

Working through the CarPlay/Acewell mounting, new handlebar controls and a few of the small details that will eventually make the whole bike work together.

This is the part of building I really enjoy — design it, print it, bolt it on, figure out what’s wrong and do it again.

Long before Boxer Metal became mostly known for BMW motorcycles, I was always messing with something.

VWs, trucks, campers, things that sat too high, things that needed racks, and things that probably worked perfectly fine before I got my hands on them.

Some were built for travel. Some for fun. Some simply because I had an idea and wanted to see if I could make it work.

Looking through these old photos reminds me that the vehicle may change, but the process really hasn’t.

See something. Have an idea. Build it. Use it.

Before Boxer Metal was just BMW motorcycles…

There were VWs, hot rods, trucks, sidecars, long road trips, Bonneville, Mount Rushmore and a whole lot of building things simply because I wanted to see if I could.

Looking through old photos this week reminded me that Boxer Metal was never really about one kind of vehicle.

It’s always been about making things.

Sometimes restoration means making the part.

Sometimes it means making the tool to fix the part.

The original BMW VIN plate had lost a few of its stamped numbers, so I made a simple fixture to keep the number stamps aligned and put them back where they belong.

Nothing fancy. A little 3D printing, some number stamps, a hammer and a problem that needed solving.
