We are proud, grateful and inspired by DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ Park and all that it represents. Last week, we celebrated this park, the Town of Truckee, the Washoe Tribe and the community that helped shape and inform this space, which won a CPRS Award for Park Planning. Its success was only possible through these partnerships, as well as the dedication and vision of everyone involved.

We especially want to thank the Washoe Tribe for their guidance and heartfelt words at the ceremony. Cultural guidance from the Washoe Tribe played a central role in shaping the park and ensuring it honors Indigenous heritage. The name DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ, meaning “the water running out,” recognizes the Truckee River as Lake Tahoe’s only outlet and connects the park to a larger environmental story.

Today, the park supports both environmental and economic revitalization. It serves as a hub connecting the west end of Truckee with the Legacy Trail bridge, creating new opportunities for movement, gathering and connection that strengthen the community’s identity.

The site itself was carefully regraded to function as a natural riparian edge, accommodating high water levels in the winter and low water levels in the summer. When complete, the street frontage phase will treat stormwater from West River Street through permeable surfaces and bioswales, returning clean water to the river and replenishing groundwater while supporting native, regenerative plantings. These elements create a place where recreation, environmental stewardship, cultural recognition and economic sustainability come together in a single connected space.

Today we celebrate a project that reconnects a community to its river, honors Indigenous heritage and restores an important natural habitat. We are honored to share that DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ Park has received a CPRS Award for Excellence in Park Planning. 🏆🌟

Once home to the Truckee Lumber Company and later a county maintenance yard, the site had long been disconnected from both the town and the river. Today, it serves as a community hub that links downtown Truckee, the Legacy Trail and the West River neighborhood, creating new opportunities for gathering, recreation and connection.

The park restores native riparian habitat, improves water quality through onsite stormwater treatment and provides direct access to the river. Future commercial spaces within the park will help support ongoing maintenance and operations, creating a sustainable model for stewardship.

Washoe Tribe's guidance for the name DEWBEYÚMUWEɁ, meaning "the water running out," honors the Truckee River as Lake Tahoe's only outlet and reflects the deep cultural and environmental significance of this place.

This project demonstrates how recreation, environmental stewardship, cultural recognition and economic vitality can come together to create a meaningful and lasting community asset.
