As and I were working on Red Rabbit, we tried to walk a fine line between nostalgia and staying present. I often say that the song is about growing up. That’s true. But more than getting older, it’s about the losses - and the moments of holding on in between, where you hold tighter because you know you’re never going to feel quite that same way ever again. There’s a very real bittersweetness to that. So we tried to translate that feeling into the final tune you hear now (wherever you get your music - go listen).

The Polaroids are of my elementary/middle school and the park near my preschool (which looks exactly the same and is still full of splinters). More even than birthdays, the beginning of the school year brought the passage of time into focus. And looking back, much of who I am now was already there. I feel both grateful and sad for that.

Red Rabbit is named for the car I learned to drive in - my dad’s bright red 2008 VW Rabbit. Some of my early forays into driving it were…embarrassing (ask my dad), but as I got older, that car came to represent a kind of freedom and movement I hadn’t known before. One of those ways of growing up you set store by but don’t necessarily notice as it’s happening.

So anyway, I didn’t actually own a car of my own until this year. Another bit of growing up I got to do. She’s not a Rabbit, and the Polaroid doesn’t do her justice, but she’s bright red. Her name is Lilith, and I feel the same behind her wheel as I did driving the Rabbit when I was 16, 17, 18. Free. Moving.

Listen to Red Rabbit wherever you get your music.

One whole week of Lake Shore Drive out in the world.
109 streams on Spotify may not seem like a lot, but to me, it means the world.

For the last couple years, as I took a break from making my own music, I didn’t know whether I’d come back, or how it would be received if/when I did. The fact you’re listening is huge. The fact some of you have listened more than once is massive. The fact that some of you have shared it with people you care about is even more.

I’m not a big-name artist, and likely never will be. That’s not why I’m here. The motto now is “for the joy of it.” And over the last week, it’s been a joy sharing this song with you.

THANK YOU.

Wow. Lake Shore Drive has been out for less than 12 hours and already the response has been overwhelming and incredible. Thank you so much for your support, for your messages, for your thoughts, for your questions, and for rockin’ out to it! Let’s keep it going.

I was a little nervous, having not come out with anything in 3 years - I’m not anymore. “Thank you” doesn’t cover it.

Lake Shore Drive is out TOMORROW.
Tomorrow is also my four year anniversary with the dude it’s written about. It seemed fitting.
Can’t wait for you to hear it.

Lake Shore Drive couldn’t have happened without and by extension - the same goes with everything I’ve released since 2021. Van has not only produced every single one of my tunes - he’s also played multiple instruments on all of them. So if you’ve heard me, you’ve heard Van. I couldn’t be more grateful - for his expertise, patience, time, energy, hard work, friendship, passion for music, and for always having a fresh pot of coffee on.

Van is a stellar singer-songwriter in his own right, and has also worked with tons of other artists. You can also catch him playing live with many of them, including (I officiated their wedding!) and so many more.

So check him out, and hit that presave link. Lake Shore Drive drops in 3 days!

Drums anyone? Another collaborator!

Meet - he played drums for Lake Shore Drive, and he’s been playing with me on my live shows for the last couple of years. Super lucky to have such a talented dude in my corner. You can also catch him with and tons of others.

Check him out! (And hit that presave link in my bio while you’re at it.)

Meet one of the people who collaborated with me on Lake Shore Drive!

is a virtuosic guitarist, vocalist, and composer, and is 1/4 of - and I’ve been lucky enough to work with him a few times now. Luke very kindly contributed vocals and guitar work on “7 Minute Walk” from my 2021 EP, Hunger Moon. (Sound on to hear some of that!)

For Lake Shore Drive, Luke threw down a KILLER solo - can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
