Burkina Faso’s military leaders have shut down the country’s election body, calling it a waste of money.

From now on, the Ministry of Interior will manage all elections.

Since they took power in September 2022, the military leaders have made many changes, including delaying elections that were meant to bring back civilian rule.

On Wednesday, the government passed a new law to remove the Independent National Electoral Commission, which used to organize elections. The Minister of Territorial Administration, Emile Zerbo, said this body cost too much to run.

He said removing the commission will help Burkina Faso have better control over its elections and reduce foreign influence.
