We talk about the housing crisis as though it is primarily about shelter — about roofs and beds and square footage.

Housing is infrastructure.

It is the foundation upon which nearly every other form of access in modern life is built.

And when that foundation is missing, the collapse rarely stays contained to one room.

Consider something as seemingly simple as an address.

The People Being Missed

Traditional housing systems were designed around a narrow profile: consistent employment history, conventional credit behavior, documentation that maps cleanly onto bureaucratic expectation. These benchmarks were not designed to exclude but in practice, they do.

People who structurally qualify for housing are being missed, not because they lack stability, but because their stability doesn’t translate into the language that gatekeeping systems speak.

They have income.

They have community.

They have capacity.

It arrives in forms the system was never built to read.

Housing as Legal Access

An address unlocks more than shelter: voter registration, banking, employment verification, school enrollment, healthcare access, and — critically legal standing in family courts.

When a parent is navigating custody proceedings, one of the first questions a court asks is: Where do you live? Is it stable? Is it appropriate?

Housing is not a backdrop to that question.

It is the question.

A parent without stable, verifiable housing faces a structural disadvantage in fighting for access to their children — regardless of their love, their capacity, their commitment. In a legal system, the absence of an address doesn’t just signal poverty.

It signals risk.

Rethinking What Qualifies

We must expand what we count as qualifying. We must build systems that read the fuller picture of a person’s stability: not just the narrow slice that traditional benchmarks were designed to see. And we must be honest: when a person is denied housing because they don’t fit a template, we are not simply denying them a bed.
