"As part of the mass layoffs from new owner Elon Musk, Twitter laid off 4,400 out of its 5,500 contract workers, according to Platformer and other news reports.
“Those workers had no recourse, and weren’t protected under the WARN act, so did not get any of the severance that full-time employees had access to even though they were often doing the same jobs,” said Catherine Bracy, executive director of nonprofit TechEquity Collaborative, which seeks to ensure that the tech industry benefits everyone.
Despite being hired through staffing agencies, “for all intents and purposes, they worked for Twitter,” Bracy said. “When Twitter enacted mass layoffs, these workers fell through the cracks because Twitter was only legally accountable to workers that it directly hires.”

'The bill would ban temp agencies from making unitemized paycheck deductions for costs such as meals or transportation to and from work sites, which can lower a worker’s pay below minimum wage. It would also require agencies to tell workers where they’ll be assigned and how much they’ll be paid. And it would mandate that temp agencies pay workers the same as permanent employees at a work site and provide them with equivalent benefits — a particular sticking point for staffing agencies.'
After delays and intense lobbying, NJ passes bill to protect temp workers This version is likely to be signed by Gov. Phil Murphy, who conditionally vetoed an earlier version of the bill.

Today, over 40 of our YouTube Music members began a historic ULP strike.
To our knowledge, this is the first time a group of Google workers has gone on strike and our first ever strike as AWU-CWA.
Workers are currently being forced to return to the office on February 6, 2023. On average, YouTube music workers are paid 19 dollars an hour and cannot afford the relocation, travel or childcare costs associated with in-person work. Most workers were hired remotely, and nearly a quarter are not based in Texas. The upcoming return to office date threatens the livelihoods of workers who do not live in the Austin area.
Please join us in demanding that and come to the table and meet with us to negotiate return-to-office expectations.
