𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 • 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟰

John Mason was one of the vanguard of ceramists responsible for reshaping the ceramics field in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He studied under Peter Voulkos, and inspired by those teachings along with his own prodigious creative impulses, he carved his own stylistic path.

Unlike Voulkos, Mason eschewed the potting wheel, opting instead to explore clay as a truly sculptural, hands-on medium. He worked on a series of vertical pieces consisting of monumental totems of clay built around a wooden post. As these vertical sculptures evolved, he began to place more importance on form over surface manipulation and the resulting works took shape as multi-arm totems, crosses and X’s. The present work, 𝘊𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘮, 𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯, is a significant example from this period and perfectly embodies the boundary-pushing nature of the ceramics he was making during this watershed moment in the history of ceramic art.

Deke Dickerson demos the 1960 Gibson ES-335TD Semi-hollowbody Electric Guitar. This leading lot in 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 is widely considered one of the most influential electric guitar designs ever produced. It blends the warmth and resonance of a hollowbody with the sustain and feedback resistance of a solidbody. Shortly after release, the model had already become closely associated with blues, jazz, and early rock musicians because of its versatility and expressive tonal range.

Harry Bertoia’s 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 forms emerged after nearly two decades of experimentation with welded wire sculpture and atmospheric light effects. This breakthrough came from discovering how light could “dance” through open metal structures. The sculpture is not meant to be perceived as a solid mass, but rather as interplay between void and matter.

Featuring more than 150 historic guitars gathered across decades, this selection features storied models from makers including Gibson, Fender, and Mosrite of California, where Niesen himself worked prior to establishing Front Porch Music in 1978.

Building on the history of Bakersfield-based country legends like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, Front Porch Music operated for nearly 50 years and became home to Niesen’s own collection of rare and vintage guitars. Each of these rare models was made in Bakersfield and has never left, until now—when they are proudly offered to future generations of musicians and music-lovers.
