In a recent Vogue article titled "Why Every Environmentalist Should Be Anti-Racist" by , we learn the importance and relativity between being a sustainable activist and anti-racist, most commonly known as "intersectional environmentalism."
Leah Thomas explains, intersectional environmentalism as an "inclusive version of environmentalism that advocates for both the protection of people and the planet. It identifies the ways in which injustices happening to marginalized communities and the earth are interconnected. It brings injustices done to the most vulnerable communities, and the earth, to the forefront and does not minimize or silence social inequality."
Thomas further shares that the "longer racism is not addressed, the harder it will be to save the planet, in part because Black activists’ time and energy are being drained. Inclusive climate justice activist Mikaela Loach notes that allies should “step up, so Black folks have the time and energy to invest in creating climate solutions” instead of using our energy to “explain [our] existence to other people” in predominantly white environmentalist spaces."
Saving the planet, as we know, is not just a community effort, but a world-wide one. It is dire to our generation and those that come after ours to ACTIVELY be anti-racist AND environmentalists. Silence, apathy, or lack of action in both spectrums can cost us our planet. 🌍

We've recently shared our commitment to , but that is just the first of many initiatives we are joining or starting to help our community. As Chicago's first sustainable, luxury shopping experience that has very strict guidelines, we make it our mission to incorporate as many diverse brands, products, and services as possible; however, we could be doing so much better.
Here are just a few incredible brands that are black owned and operated. Many of these and other BIPOC brands have been receiving a heavy influx of orders and are now asking that we look into purchasing gift certificates instead. We highly encourage this option, if possible.
Feel free to comment below any other BIPOC brands that are plastic-free, vegan, and ethical. We'd love to include them —
