Demand for vascular care is rising as the population ages, life expectancy increases and more patients live with vascular disease.

At the same time, HRSA projects that the vascular surgery workforce will meet just 66% of national demand in 2038—the lowest level of workforce adequacy among the specialties evaluated.

These projections reinforce the need to strengthen the vascular surgery workforce at every career stage, from introducing students and trainees to the specialty to supporting practicing vascular surgeons throughout their careers. That also means advocating for policies that reduce unnecessary administrative burdens—including challenges related to CMS requirements and prior authorization—so vascular surgeons can spend more time caring for patients and remain in practice longer.

This also highlights why SVS has invested in our campaign. Patients, health care executives and referring providers need to understand the value of vascular surgery and the unique expertise vascular surgeons bring to patient care—from lifestyle interventions and long-term disease management to endovascular procedures and open surgery.

You do not have to be on Capitol Hill to use your voice. Every vascular surgeon can help raise awareness of the specialty, educate the public and demonstrate why vascular surgery matters. Building greater recognition of vascular surgery is something we can all contribute to—and an important part of strengthening its future.
