On our way down memories of technology past, our throwback Thursday is the letter. Looking ahead gives us possibilities, with technology changing so fast it’s good to see things that have still lasted through the test of history and have evolved with the changing time.

The physical task of carrying out written parcels takes us back to when Pharaohs would use couriers to send out decrees throughout the territory of the state (2400 BCE). The oldest piece mail also comes from Egypt, dating to 255 BCE.

Email has become our new standard of receiving everything from credit card offers, spam, mail from a loved one to just a pile of social media updates 😁

Throw Back Thursday :
An Ornithopter flies by mimicking the flapping of bird wings. The design and construction of these contraptions may be different, they usually mirror the animals they are inspired by. The Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus tells the story of a father who uses an invention crafter from feathers and wax. Perhaps this mythos gave inspiration to Leonardo da Vinic who made countless drawings and models of the Ornithopter. One of the first is said to be made as early as 400BC by Archytas of Tarentum. Crewed constructs are powered by engines or by the pilot. Short flights have been recorded. However, the ornithopter sadly stays impractical. Happy Indigenous People Day!

The quill was a writing tool constructed of a molted flight feather of a large bird. The earliest ancestor of the pen is suggested to be the brush the Chinese used for writing by the first millennium BCE. The early Egyptians however, employed thick reeds for pen like implements about 300 BCE. Quills offered control when writing with ink before the invention of the dip pen, the metal-nibbed pen, the fountain pen, and, eventually, the ballpoint pen. The shift to the quill pen occurs in the seventh-century writings of St. Isidore of Sevilla.

Throwback Thursday! The floppy disk and diskettes were used during the last century. These types of external storage were made up of a thin and flexible magnetic field. The information was written on them, and within these plastics a fabric was placed inside to remove any dust particles that would prevent the disk from spinning.
