Protect Ya Neck - A Critical Listen with Erik 02/18/2014

Protect Ya Neck - A Critical Listen with Erik I hope you heard some new things in Norwegian Wood last week after reading my blog- this week it's something completely different.  Depending on your viewpoint, some might not even call this music whereas others might call it the ONLY music.  It's an early 90's hip hop cut from the Wu Tang Clan call...

Been helping folks on so many different types of projects: gear recommendations & purchasing, studio layout & setup, debugging recording software update problems Apple couldn't fix (and letting Apple know how to fix it in the future!) and removing vocals from songs to make custom 'karaoke' tracks. Clients are happy and Life is good!

Why the iPad is the future of music 04/12/2013

Why the iPad is the future of music I just finished setting somebody up with a recording system based completely around an iPad.  As I was driving to my client I was excitedly explaining the whole thing to my dad, and I realized a few things about WHY I am so excited about this.

04/02/2013

What I Do:

• Recording System Design
• Education
• System streamlining

Design is where I slay dragons before people know they exist, taking time to understand how the client thinks of their creative/recording process and then making equipment recommendations which parallel their train of thought. This way the artist has a recording system which is a step or two ahead of them, in the direction they are already heading. There are SO many different ways to write and to record, there pretty much is something for everyone. Having worked with computer based recording systems since 1993 (over 20 years, sheesh!) I have a unique vantage point and can put people into a system that fits their creative needs best.

Education could be termed "advanced tech support" or "instruction manual translation" or "studio ninja situation obliteration." I pride myself on having an undefeated record in having handled every single studio problem that has ever presented itself to me. The artist's ability to create incredible art is sometimes matched only by their ability to create incredible problems to solve in their studios. I'm patient and determined, and I can find a quick fix for people while also educating them on the most direct methods to get their art into the physical universe.

This takes us into system streamlining. As musicians work in their studios their tastes change and their workflows evolve. I love to come in with an exterior viewpoint and see what the artist might not be able to see that holds them back with their tools. In my career as a record producer and studio engineer on commercials, I've learned that the job of the engineer is to make all the technical aspects of the recording process invisible to the artists. This way, when the artist has an idea and asks "can I...?" the engineer can respond with "here you go... rolling!" In a home recording environment this process becomes muddled where the artist is the engineer. My product as a studio client is a system that is setup to record, with a person who knows how to record, so when the time comes the artist can think only of recording without ever having to be distracted by recording.

Hi, Doctor Nick! - Mastering Tips and and the Importance of Bringing in a Professional Engineer 03/19/2013

I couldn't agree more with Dr. Nick. I have a favorite mastering engineer and love having his touches on my mixes. That exterior viewpoint can be the icing on the cake rather than you destroying your own mix in the name of "mastering"

Hi, Doctor Nick! - Mastering Tips and and the Importance of Bringing in a Professional Engineer As we've said many times before, there's no stopping Nick Hook. Even while immersed in the madness of SXSW, he still took the time to dole out advice to the XLR8R faithful. There's no topic our resident advice columnist is afraid to speak on, so anyone out there with questions about music, DJing, pr...
