Do you know the Galaxie frog? It comes from Madagascar 🇲🇬 but can also be found in southern India in Kerala. A marvel of our beautiful nature.

The Galaxie frog, also known as the Galaxy frog or Starry Night Reed Frog (scientific name: *Heterixalus alboguttatus*), is a species of frog found in Madagascar. It’s known for its striking appearance, characterized by a black body with bright white spots that resemble stars in the night sky. This distinctive pattern has earned it its celestial name.

These frogs are typically found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, freshwater marshes, and intermittent freshwater marshes. They are known for their vibrant colors and unique patterns, making them a subject of interest for both researchers and amphibian enthusiasts.

This is probably my favorite frog I keep; what a privilege to have successfully produced the golden mantella (mantella aurantiaca). Similar to poison arrow frogs with bright colors, these critically endangered Madagascan frogs sport their flamboyant orange and reds to deter predators from eating them. Unfortunately, in opposing manner, their colors have made them a very desirable frog by the pet trade. Traditionally not commonly bred in captivity, coupled with decades of pet trade collection and major habitat loss in their native range has led this frog to be highly endangered. Though the babies produced here can’t directly help the wild populations of golden mantella, hopefully continued captive propagation can relieve stress on wild collection while simultaneously making these incredible frogs available to hobbyists with similar goals in mind! All the babies from this breeding will be staying here to strengthen the colony, as these frogs breed best in large groups. Frogs are valued as food by humans and also have many cultural roles in literature, symbolism and religion. They are also seen as environmental bellwethers, with declines in frog populations often viewed as early warning signs of environmental damage. Frog populations have declined significantly since the 1950s. More than one third of species are considered to be threatened with extinction and over 120 are believed to have become extinct since the 1980s. The number of malformations among frogs is on the rise and an emerging fungal disease, chytridiomycosis, has spread around the world. Conservation biologists are working to understand the causes of these problems and to resolve them.
