Hank Cochran, who wrote "Make the World Go Away," once performed as one half of a duo called "The Cochran Brothers" with rockabilly star Eddie Cochran of "Summertime Blues" fame, even though the two men weren't actually related at all. Before this song, Cochran had already written Patsy Cline classics like "I Fall to Pieces" and "She's Got You." Mort Shuman genuinely didn't want anything to do with "Surrender." When his songwriting partner Doc Pomus brought him the idea of adapting the 1902 Neapolitan ballad "Torna a Surriento" for Elvis, Shuman reportedly snapped, "Why should I want to write for some redneck idiot who wants to sound like Mario Lanza?" Pomus ended up recording the demo himself with little enthusiasm from either writer. James Burton played guitar on both Ricky Nelson's 1963 version of "Fools Rush In" and Elvis's 1971 recording of it — and he was the one who quietly brought them together.
