It's time to register for the EOP Alums Pop-in@10 Panel Discussion -

"Living Academic and Career Life as a "Double Threat" ...Minority and Educated!"

Join Sarafina Bassett (Class of 2013), as she moderates the panel discussion as EOP Alums speak their truths candidly. They will talk about challenges they faced in higher education institutions and select professions. They will conclude the panel discussion with an explanation about how their coping mechanisms have or might affect their long-term career success.

Objectives:

• "Double Threat" and "Code Switching" defined.

Discussion about life after EOP, academic and
career challenges.

• Discuss their status as being the only minority in
the room and feelings of isolation.

• Discuss coping mechanisms which include and
are not limited to learning how to "code
switch."

This event will take place in a virtual environment from 10:00 am - 11:00 am on Saturday, April 24, 2021.

Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: EOP Alumni Panel. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting. As part of the 40th Anniversary celebration EOP Alums will facilitate a panel discussion for this event.

I participated in the UIC Early Outreach Program from 2008 – 2010. After graduating high school, I enrolled in the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a minor in Entrepreneurship.

As an indigenous man from Guerrero, Mexico I have defeated many socioeconomic barriers. My mother has always been a very hard worker and was my example. She believes that with hard work and dedication anything is possible.

For six + years I have worked in youth development and project planning work with various non-profit organizations.
Currently, I am a youth program manager for the Chicago Center for Arts & Technology. In this position, I research and conduct evaluations of youth programs. Being a product of the public school system, I believe all youth deserve an equal chance of success.

I am the first one in my family to receive a bachelor's degree, purchase real state, and achieve many other accomplishments.

My goal is to help as many Chicago teens reach their potential and become global citizens.

After attending the EOP for 6 years and graduating in 2016, I enrolled at Valparaiso University in a double major Social Work and Political Science.

During my time at Valparaiso University, I worked with incarcerated populations as a tutor, intern, and student.

The focus of my senior thesis is ways to reform the juvenile justice system and provide youth resources they need to reduce recidivism and keep them connected with their community.

Upon my graduation, I plan to pursue a masters in Social Work and a Law degree.
