In honor of National Trauma Awareness Month, AAAM is highlighting individuals playing a vital role in trauma care, injury treatment, and automotive safety research.

AAAM is dedicated to advancing trauma research and road safety through many disciplines, from the evolution of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) to supporting traffic safety research around the globe.

315,167 people were injured due to distracted driving in 2024 according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

AAAM is advancing groundbreaking research in road safety, trauma, and vehicle safety to save lives and prevent injuries on the road.

“AAAM’s stewardship of the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) has had a profound impact on trauma research, injury surveillance, and vehicle safety," says Thomas Hartka, MD, MS, MSDS, Emergency Medicine Physician and Data Scientist, School of Medicine at the University of Virginia. "AAAM’s continued leadership in maintaining and evolving AIS is essential to improving trauma care and injury prevention.”

May is National Trauma Awareness Month. AAAM's Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) advances trauma research and gives clinicians the tools they need to effectively assess and treat road traffic-related injuries.
