It was the honor of a lifetime to be inducted into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame last Saturday night at Buddy Guy’s Legends.
I’m deeply grateful that my ancestors came to the Lower West Side of Chicago 120 years ago. Without their bravery and sacrifice, I wouldn’t be here today.

When I was around ten years old, I heard the blues for the first time—and it changed my life. The first time I listened to Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Little Walter, it felt like being struck by lightning. From then on, I set out to learn from, emulate (or offen mimic), and honor the music they created.

At age fourteen, I began going to the Chicago Blues Fest. I got there for the first note at noon until the last note echoed through the Petrillo Music Shell. Eventually, I started sneaking into blues clubs around the city, where I witnessed legends like James Cotton, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, the Myers Brothers, and Mr. Buddy Guy himself.

Later, I was fortunate enough not only to meet but also perform with some of the giants of Chicago blues, including Luther Allison, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Hubert Sumlin, and Billy Boy Arnold.

Twenty-five years ago, I formed the Cash Box Kings in an effort to help preserve the Chess-era Chicago blues of the 1940s and ’50s that has always been close to my heart. I will forever be indebted to my bandmates past and present: Travis Koopman, Chris Boeger, Billy Flynn, Kenny Smith, Todd Cambio, Oscar Wilson, Mark Haines, John Lauler, Derek Hendrickson, Barrelhouse Chuck, Lee Kanehira, Joel Paterson, Jimmy Sutton, Brad Ber and so many others who have been part of this journey over the past quarter century. I especially want to thank my wife and my family, who have supported me every step of the way. My parents for encouraging my musical endeavors. And my Uncle Ron and Aunt Sue and my cousins for taking me under their roof when I was 14 years old. I wouldn't be who I am today without all those people.

I am profoundly grateful to have had the chance to play blues, a musical tradition that I have no direct familial, cultural, or historical connection to. This music was borne out of the struggles and horrors endured by enslaved people and their descendants in this country. It is a music of hope, pain, resilience, and ultimately perseverance. I am humbled and thankful to have been welcomed, embraced, and given the chance to participate in this tradition by the those who are directly connected to it.
