The coming week will not be an ordinary week. And I could not let it pass without sitting still long enough to say something.

On Friday, June 19th, Juneteenth, right here in my city, Chicago, the Obama Presidential Center doors will open. A campus built on the belief that everyday people can create extraordinary change. And on this same day, my ancestors were finally told what had already been true, that they were free. Just sit with that!

I grew up in Camden, Mississippi, population 1,000 people. I know what it means to come from a place where freedom was hard-won and even harder kept. I know what it means to watch the world tell you who you are before you get the chance to tell yourself. And I know, personally, what it means to have to become anyway.

Michelle Obama wrote it plainly: becoming isn't about arriving. It is about always being in the process of growing. And right now, in the middle of all the uncertainty in this world, I am in that process. We all are.

President Obama stood before our nation and said, "Yes. We. Can." Not someday. Right now. Together. As we are.

Maya Angelou said it best: “We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated.” Baldwin, Mandela, and Toni Morrison all echoed the same truth - face it. Your story matters. Keep going.

I woke up this morning with a full heart. Not because everything is okay. Believe me, it is not. But because I serve a God who makes beauty from ashes and broken glass. Who opens doors in the middle of wilderness. Who says, especially now, be still and know.

Let the Obama Presidential Center remind you that hope is not naive. It is necessary. Let Juneteenth remind you that freedom delayed is not freedom denied forever. And let whatever you are walking through remind you that your becoming is still very much in progress.

Show up anyway. Stay rooted. Keep going.

I woke up this morning still in pain from oral surgery on Monday, both sides of my mouth with stitches. (Apparently, that's one way God can shut me up. 😅)

But that's not why I'm sharing today.

Every morning, I dedicate an hour to an hour and a half to ME with meditation, prayer, and yoga or tai chi. That time isn't a luxury. It's how I'm able to pour into others at all. If you've ever called me before 9am and got no answer, now you know why. 🙏🏾

This morning was different. I woke up in pain, face more swollen than yesterday, and I have the honor of speaking on a Zoom at 12noon EST today with some of the best real estate advisors in the world.

This morning, prayer and meditation hit different.

I spent more time in tears than not.

My Bible plan this week is entitled "How Did I Get Here?" Boy, it couldn't be more fitting. Today's verses were Hebrews 6:19-20, Song of Solomon 2:15, and 2 Corinthians 4:7. And today's Verse of the Day was Psalm 27:14:

📖 "Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD."

This morning was heavy. But here's what I know:

Sometimes your serving is about others, not yourself.
✅ Show up anyway.
✅ Be fully present anyway.
✅ Be giving anyway.

We are jars of clay, fragile, flawed, and very human. But that's exactly where God's strength shines brightest. 🙏🏾
