While Cremation is permitted in the Catholic Church, the scattering of ashes is NOT. Here's why:
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC no. 417) states: "The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come." When choosing cremation, the Catholic Church tells us to bury or entomb cremated remains on consecrated grounds. Choosing a Catholic Cemetery ensures your loved one is laid to rest following the Catholic Church's guidelines.
Beyond doctrine, psychologists also affirm that as human beings, we need a physical place to grieve, to remember, and to heal. Scattering ashes may feel symbolic in the moment, but it leaves no sacred space to return to, no lasting tribute, and no historical connection for future generations. Families who scatter cremated remains often regret this decision in future years when there is no viable remembrance of their loved one or no place of memorial.
📍 At Catholic Cemeteries of Chicago, we provide sacred burial and entombment options for cremated remains. From peaceful cremation gardens to indoor glass-front niches, our consecrated grounds ensure your loved one is laid to rest in a holy place, surrounded by prayer, and honored for generations to come.

Two powerful earthquakes struck about 100 miles west of Caracas on Wednesday night, causing widespread destruction across parts of Venezuela. Your gift is needed for immediate response to the earthquakes in Venezuela: https://brnw.ch/21x3E5X.
CRS is working through Caritas Venezuela and the local Church to quickly deliver emergency shelter, food, safe water, medical care and other critical relief to those affected.
Buildings collapsed, homes and essential infrastructure were damaged, and thousands of people have been left without safe shelter. Even as the full extent of the damage is still emerging, Catholic parishes have opened their doors to shelter displaced families and provide emergency assistance.
Your gift today will help get urgently needed supplies to families and communities in the difficult days ahead.

Much ado was made about Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on May 28 and the gifts he gave to the pontiff — including a Chicago Cubs hat for the famous Chicago White Sox fan.
But tucked into the box of gifts were handwritten letters from three young sisters who are parishioners at St Benedict The African in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. https://www.chicagocatholic.com/web/chicago-catholic//Chicagoland/-/article/2026/06/17/three-sisters-send-letters-to-pope-leo-with-chicago-delegation
