I was curious why Iowa State’s budget number exploded from FY24 to FY25, especially since Iowa State didn’t make the tournament in 2024. The answer appears to be the $3,475,506 the school allocated towards “Facilities Maintenance and Operations”, perhaps for this project. Nobody else reported more than $500,00 for that budget item.

Several other schools, from low-majors to P4 institutions, have reached out to third-party consultants to help get pricing information or market research before announcing anything. We expect many more schools to announce patch partnerships over the next two months.

The EO is scheduled to go into effect on August 1. Since college sports is not, in fact, part of the Executive Branch, and since Congress hasn’t actually passed any laws about any of this stuff, the EO ties enforcement to federal education funding. Schools that do not comply with the EO, (by say, starting an athlete who has transferred more than once) could risk federal funding appropriations.

It’s notable when you start hearing athletic directors at big-time programs begin to openly call for getting rid of these events…especially in the SEC, seeing as they basically invented the modern Conference Championship Game Extravaganza.

What are the values that are driving this potential reform? Is it service to the fan? That doesn’t seem to be the case.

Additional games, travel, and missed class time for more athletes doesn’t seem to line up with the professed goals of academic achievement, so that probably isn’t the key value.
