Every single week, I meet people who feel like they aren't "normal." They feel things deeply. They get a sense about things that others seem to miss. I went to a funeral today and witnessed so many people grieving. Grieving the person. Grieving their mortality. Grieving the past. Grieving the future they thought they would have. Grieving lost time. As an empath, I can feel the layers of grief and it’s one of the most tragic parts of life and one of the most natural. And you realize we all will have to endure it. Witness it. Experience it, one way or another. I hold this sadness with the sanctity that it deserves. Grief is closely related love. Without grief, we wouldn't have prove that love lasts long after a person, experience, or time in our lives is gone.
In sessions, I often bear witness to grief. The life someone thought was for them, that ultimately left them unfulfilled. The relationship that lasted 5 years, but didn't last longer for whatever reason. The realization that all good things (and bad things), come to an end, and we're left with a deep desire to understand wtf it all means.
Humans are here to understand love in all its forms. So with that, we MUST experience grief. When I see a weeping daughter, wife, or brother, like I did today--all I see and feel is someone's heart bursting wide open. The rawness, the vulnerability, the pain...it just shows how big their heart is. How deep their love for that person is.
And I would be lying if I said that I don't find these moments not only deeply saddening to witness, yet deeply beautiful. Deeply human.
As an empath, one of the hardest things is being able to feel so much. And one of the most beautiful.
For those who are grieving something big, a loss that feels like it will swallow you whole, just know you are deeply held and seen by every single human who has or will experience this. You are not alone.
