Plant Daddy: Plants in frost, pots vs. the ground & more 05/01/2026

Brrrr.... a cold morning today. But happy May! (Even if it feels like March this morning). The first day of May is also the halfway point between the spring equinox and summer solstice. So summer, despite this morning's chill, is right around the corner.

In case you missed it last weekend, here's the Plant Daddy segment from last Saturday. A fresh segment drops on the WGN Morning News tomorrow at 7:25 and 9:25a.

Plant Daddy: Plants in frost, pots vs. the ground & more CHICAGO (WGN) – WGN’s “Plant Daddy” Tim Joyce is back to share some weekend gardening tips, including what plants can handle the frost, choosing to plant in a pot versus the ground and more. Got an…

NEXT 24 HOURS & 7 DAY OUTLOOK: We had a taste of May at the end of March in Chicagoland-- and now we're getting a dose of March weather to begin May. Gotta love a Midwest spring!

Let's focus on the good news. The clouds and cooler temps keep severe weather away-- so a few showers-- but no torrential rainfall to send our rivers back above their banks. And there are improvements to our temps-- and just when a lot of us would like them: the weekend. And the showers we'll see on Thu/Fri are what I call "solar powered showers" so they bubble up each afternoon-- and they're mostly passing quick showers for the most part. Though Thursday's showers do look a little more widespread. Also, May 1st is the halfway point of spring-- so summer is around the corner, even if it doesn't quite feel like it.

Now for the not so good news, and I'm looking at you gardeners and farmers. May frost can happen here-- but it's relatively rare-- so watch out for Friday morning and Saturday mornings for the coldest temps. Sensitive plants should be covered and/or brought back inside.

Next week looks way more seasonal-- highs in the mid to low 60s and low temps in the 40s. Some forecast models are trying to push in some 70s-- but I don't want to get anyone too excited just yet.

updates our forecast coming up on the tomorrow for the whooooole 6 hours tomorrow, starting at 4a. I'm back this weekend for the Morning News. On the weekends, we start things up at 7a. Hope to see you then!

NEXT 24 HOURS & 7 DAY OUTLOOK: June-like temps for the far western portions of Chicagoland this weekend and more of a mid to late March feel for areas near the lake.

Here's the setup for Monday: strong SSE to SSW winds will boost our warmth and humidity to potentially trigger strong to severe storms in the afternoon and early evening. The first wave arrives just after lunchtime and moves from west to east across the region. This first batch of storms looks to skew a bit south of the city-- which is good news for folks still recovering from heavy rain and flooding. The second wave has more severe potential and arrives in the western suburbs during the evening commute and if the forecast models are correct-- would get to the city around the 7-9p window. These storms will be moving fast and packing winds that could see gusts between 40-50 mph.

On the backside of the storms, we'll see much calmer weather for the rest of the week. A few scattered passing showers are possible Wed/Thu-- but you'll really notice the chillier temps-- especially if you're by the lake.

Next weekend is the first one of May and it looks warmer and sunnier with temps getting into the 60s and possibly 70s by Sunday.

Meteorologist Morgan Kolkmeyer updates our forecast coming up tomorrow morning for the WGN Morning News staring at 4a. Paul Konrad takes over at 6a and Donovan TV will be tracking developing storms during the midday show. If you haven't downloaded the WGN TV free weather app-- it alerts you wherever you are-- you'll get updated up to the minute warnings in your pocket or purse.

NEXT 24 HOURS for Chicagoland will be a bit above average for temps. Tonight, building SSE winds will keep our temps pretty steady in the mid to low 50s. The average low is in the 40s for this part of spring.

Tomorrow, clouds & sun to start with a couple pre-frontal showers a possibility. The main event should arrive in the mid-afternoon with a few rounds of strong to severe t'storms possible. Average high is 63.

I'll be updating the forecast coming up on the WGN TV Evening News in a little bit, starting at 5p.

7 DAY OUTLOOK: Sunshine emerges from the fog & clouds away from the lake. That's where we'll see temps in the seasonal mid to low 60s. Towards the city & lake cooler and cloudier where highs will feel more like March than the last weekend of April.

Tomorrow, warmer but storm potential by the mid-afternoon and some could be strong to severe. High temps in the low 70s. We do get into a much calmer but cooler weather pattern for the last days of April and start of May. Highs on Wed/Thu/Fri will struggle to get to 60-- especially by the lake. Next weekend is trending back towards sunny and milder.

I'll be updating the forecast coming up tonight on the WGN TV Evening News at 5/9/10p.

WGN Wake Up Weather: Clouds and fog start the day for Chicagoland with the densest fog out towards DeKalb where visibility is only about a quarter mile. Away from the lake clouds part for some sunshine and temps getting into the seasonal mid to low 60s.

Closer to the lake, chillier and cloudier for longer. High temps likely only upper 40s and low 50s again. We do see milder weather coming into the forecast for tomorrow-- but it comes with potential storms as well. I'll have details on the WGN Morning News until 9a.

7 DAY OUTLOOK: Today a huge temp difference between warmest (71 in Streator) and coolest (46 in Kenosha & other lakeside locales). We'll see this again tomorrow-- but temps a bit warmer and likely a bit less of the drizzle and fog.

Milder still for Monday with a chance of strong to severe t'storms developing in the afternoon and evening. At this point we look to see two waves of the storms. One mid to late afternoon and a second line of storms closer to 8p. All hazards are possible.

The rest of April looks much much calmer- though the price tag appears to be slightly cooler than average temps that will struggle to get to near 60-- especially by the lake. I'll be updating that forecast coming up on the WGN Morning News starting tomorrow @ 7a.

SATURDAY FORECAST & 7 DAY OUTLOOK: Fog is evaporating into some nice blue skies across Chicagoland. High temps today get into the low 60s inland but only in the mid 50s by the lake.

Partly cloudy skies this evening with clouds returning by daybreak. Tomorrow a lot like today, with clouds in the morning-- sun in the afternoon and temps in the seasonal 60s.

Warmer & muggier on Monday with rain returning in the afternoon/evening in the form of possible strong to severe t'storms.

Some good news though, only the Fox River remains under a Flood Warning. The river crested on Thursday and will continue to fall over the weekend. The warning on the Des Plaines River was pulled this morning.

After Monday, our weather looks calm for many days in a row. But it will also be a tad chillier than the mid to low 60s we usually get for late April and early May.

I'll be updating the forecast tonight on the WGN TV Evening News tonight. Hope to see ya then!

7 DAY FORECAST: A decent rebound from our chilly weekend-- but temps will soar towards the mid to upper 70s tomorrow and I think we'll get above 80 on Thursday.

The warmth does come with a chance of some rainfall. Lesser amounts on Tuesday and most of the showers look to be luckily south of the city-- since the flooding is mostly in our northern suburbs. The Des Plaines River crested Monday morning, but the Fox River isn't expected to crest until Thursday. Extra rain later in the week could cause more issues since our soil is still quite saturated.

Seasonal temps expected for this coming weekend. That's when I'll be back for the news, both morning and night. Meteorologist Morgan Kolkmeyer updates our forecast coming up on the WGN Morning News from 4-6a

Photos from Tim Joyce's post 04/20/2026

7 DAY OUTLOOK: After a showery and cool weekend in Chicagoland-- we did see more dry hours than soggy ones. We're monitoring moderate to almost major flooding on two area rivers.

While Monday looks to be the coldest morning all week, we've got more weather whiplash coming our way. Thursday looks to be our warmest afternoon and Friday our soggiest day of the next 7.

We've already had a record rainy start to spring this year-- so the last thing we need is any more rain-- especially in the watersheds of the Fox and Des Plaines River.

Morgan Kolkmeyer updates our forecast coming up on the WGN Morning News . I'll be back tomorrow evening, hope to see ya then!

04/20/2026

Freeze Advisory for Central Cook Co. overnight and Freeze Warning for outlying areas.

Tomorrow warmer but temps still below the average of 60. We'll soar towards 80 soon-- and not just once this week.

Details coming up on the WGN TV Evening News starting at 9p. Hope to see ya then!
