Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd watches the smoke rise from her chamber. She's a princess of Deheubarth, married to the Welsh prince Gruffydd ap Rhys. Her husband left days ago, riding north to rally allies and support. The plan was to gather strength, build alliances, wait for the right moment.

But the Normans aren't waiting.

And neither will she.

What happens next defies every expectation of medieval warfare. Gwenllian doesn't send messengers. She doesn't retreat to safety. She calls for her armor and sends word through the valleys: gather your weapons, we march at first light.

Within days, Welsh fighters arrive. Farmers. Warriors. Men who've lost homes to Norman raids. They don't question who's leading them. They follow her toward Kidwelly.

A woman commanding an army in 1136 is nearly unthinkable. The chroniclers will struggle to make sense of it later, searching for precedents that don't exist. But Gwenllian isn't concerned with precedent. She's concerned with survival.
