DID YOU KNOW? While considered legally free under the Emancipation Proclamation, not all enslaved people were truly free until over two years later when the final enforcement of the proclamation was made on June 19th, 1865 in Texas. We celebrate their freedom and the historical significance of today.

Today we honor Maxine Shelly Turner. She was a founding member of the Rho Chapter of Alpha Omega Epsilon. She was one of the 32 people killed at Virginia Tech on April 16th, 2007. Maxine was a senior in Chemical Engineering and was due to graduate with honors in May of that year.

The Alpha Omega Epsilon Foundation established the Maxine Shelly Turner Memorial Scholarship in 2007. It is a $2,000 scholarship awarded annually. Through this scholarship, Maxine’s love of the engineering profession lives on by helping other young women realize their dreams of being engineers and scientists.
