DMX had people paying up to $100 for a tape before he became a superstar.

On The 85 South Show, Jadakiss described how X moved through the projects in Yonkers with recordings people couldn’t get anywhere else. Buyers would pay for a copy, dub it for others, and create demand for the next one. Jadakiss remembered people competing to get the new tape first:

“He was independent before independent was out. He was already independent… already selling tapes $100 a piece.”

Kiss also said some of the rhymes that reached the world on DMX’s albums were ones they had heard growing up. To them, X was already a star in Yonkers.
